From the observation deck of Kobe Port Tower, you can see Kōbe’s harbor, the city and the Rokko Mountains. This perspective is complemented by the city’s very different highlights: historic residences, maritime and technological culture, nature and Chinese cuisine. When planning, it helps to first decide which themes you want to shape your trip, rather than treating a list of attractions as a ready-made itinerary.

Historic Houses and Cultural Themes

Numerous Western-style residences from the Meiji and Taishō periods have been preserved in the Kitano district. The Kitano-Yamamoto district is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, a national designation. These two historical highlights differ: one refers to architectural styles and periods, while the other identifies the special status of a group of buildings. If you are interested in architectural history, you can decide where to focus based on whether preserved Western-style residences or the designation of a traditional ensemble interests you more.

Ships and Vehicles

The Kobe Maritime Museum uses authentic navigation instruments and ship equipment, dioramas and videos to showcase ship technology, the appeal of cruise ships, and changes to the harbor and city. Kawasaki World offers a different vehicle focus: it features historic motorcycles and a 0 Series Shinkansen, with interactive vehicle attractions complementing the exhibits. This clearly distinguishes two technology interests: shipping and harbor development on the one hand, and historic vehicles and interactive attractions on the other. Choose your cultural stops based on which theme appeals to you most.

Gardens, Waterfalls and Views

The Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens can be reached from Shin-Kobe Station by the Kobe Nunobiki Ropeway in about ten minutes. As operating conditions may change, check the latest information about the ropeway before your visit. The Nunobiki Waterfalls comprise Otaki, Mentaki, Meotodaki and Tsutsumigataki; Otaki is 43 meters high. The gardens offer a different natural highlight from the named group of waterfalls: the approximate travel time helps you plan a visit to the gardens, while Otaki’s height provides a specific measure of the landscape.

Chinese Cuisine and Choosing Where to Stay

Nankinmachi is considered one of Japan’s three major Chinatowns. Numerous shops there offer Chinese ingredients, goods and food. If you want to include Chinese cuisine alongside cultural or scenic experiences, you’ll find a clear culinary focus here.

Sannomiya has several stations served by different railway lines as well as a bus terminal, making it a transport hub for connections within and beyond Kōbe. Sannomiya is a hub for rail and bus services; Shin-Kobe is the starting point for the ropeway to the gardens.
