From the 93-meter-high summit of Cape Peshi, enjoy a 360-degree panorama of Rebun Island, the main island of Hokkaido, and Mount Rishiri. With views, forest and water, Oshidomari offers several distinct nature experiences to consider when planning your trip.
Views from Cape Peshi
The viewpoint is near the Oshidomari ferry terminal. The climb to Cape Peshi takes about 20 minutes; weather can affect the walking time. Treat this figure as an estimate when planning your day. Its proximity to the terminal places the summit at your arrival point and provides a clear landmark for finding your way around Oshidomari.
Himenuma and Forest Trails
At Himenuma, the pond itself is the main attraction: it has a circumference of about one kilometer and lies in a lush primeval forest. It was formed around 1920 when natural springs were joined together. Its size and origins offer different points of reference for understanding the site. The drive from the Oshidomari ferry terminal takes about ten minutes; road conditions can affect travel time.
The developed History Forest Trail is very close to Rishiri Fuji Onsen and connects with the neighboring primeval forest. Along the forest path, you can listen to birdsong and enjoy nature. Here, the trail itself is part of the experience: unlike the summit views, the focus is on the forest and listening for birdsong.
Kanro Sensui adds another stop to this selection, located on the Oshidomari hiking trail on Mount Rishiri. The spring is near the trail’s third station and can be reached from Rishiri Hokuroku Campground via the Oshidomari hiking trail in about a 20-minute walk. Trail conditions can affect walking time. Himenuma is a pond; Kanro Sensui is a spring.
Plan Your Arrival and Travel Times
The ferry crossing from Wakkanai to the Oshidomari ferry terminal on Rishiri takes 100 minutes. Depending on the season, only four ferries run per day; check the schedule separately before planning your arrival. The seasonal frequency is a separate planning consideration from excursions on land.
The travel times given refer to different activities and starting points: the Cape Peshi figure is for the climb, the Himenuma figure is for a drive from the ferry terminal, and the Kanro Sensui figure is for a walk from the campground. When planning, be sure to consider the starting point and mode of travel for each; the figures alone do not represent comparable durations for a full excursion. If you are looking for a hotel in Oshidomari, you can first decide which of these landscape experiences you want to shape your stay, then check the ferry crossing and each individual leg separately. Weather, road and trail conditions can affect the estimated times.
