Cultural History and Unique Places
The 星の降る里百年記念館 was built in 1993 to commemorate 100 years since the start of Ashibetsu’s development. Exhibits include the “クマ形石製品,” designated as a tangible cultural property of Hokkaido Prefecture, finds from the Takisato ruins, and Ainu everyday items. Another cultural stop is カナディアンワールド, a privately operated park recreating the world of the novel “赤毛のアン.” Reconstructed buildings include グリーンゲイブルズ（アンの家）, a church, and ダイアナの家. For readers interested in the novel, this theme makes the site a cultural attraction in its own right.
The 旧三井芦別鉄道炭山川橋梁 also tells the story of Ashibetsu’s coal-mining history. The bridge crosses the Tanzan River and is considered an important legacy of this industry. In 2009, it was designated a registered tangible cultural property of Japan; in 2019, it was registered as part of the Japan Heritage story “炭鉄港.” The city’s cultural context also includes its partnership with Charlottetown, Canada.
Parks, Views, and Scenery
旭ヶ丘公園 is located within the prefectural Furano-Ashibetsu Nature Park. Among the plants growing in its grounds are lilacs and エゾエンゴサク; a central flower bed adds color to the park. It is considered one of Ashibetsu’s outstanding cherry blossom spots, although seasonal conditions vary. You can also enjoy forest bathing in the wooded areas “ライオンズの森” and “すいようの森.” With a little luck, you may spot wild Ezo squirrels there.
For a scenic viewpoint, head to 上金剛山展望台: at an elevation of 314 meters, it offers expansive views over the Ashibetsu urban area. In 黄金水松公園 stands the namesake yew tree, 黄金水松. It is estimated to be 1,700 years old, stands 21 meters tall, and has a trunk circumference of 6.2 meters. These estimates and measurements offer a different focus from the views or seasonal blossoms at 旭ヶ丘公園.
三段滝 is impressive in scale: the waterfall is 10 meters high and 70 meters wide. A short trail leads from the parking lot to the water in just a few minutes. However, the path has many roots and rock slabs, making it somewhat difficult to walk. Plan accordingly for this approach.
Activities in the City
Fishing, canoeing, and jet skiing are possible at 滝里湖; you will need to bring your own equipment. 滝里湖オートキャンプ場 is located on the lakeshore. The lakeside setting and range of activities give your plans a different focus from a visit centered on culture or scenery.
The animal area at 旭ヶ丘公園 is home to numerous Japanese macaques, as well as ponies and other animals. In the petting area, visitors can hold small animals on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays; young children can do so too. Animals available include rabbits and guinea pigs. For park golf, the なまこ山 course is an option: it is recognized by the Japan Park Golf Association and has 36 holes. Another convenient stop in the city is 道の駅スタープラザ芦別.
