Chōshi combines a striking coastal landscape with themes ranging from geology to soy sauce. 屏風ケ浦 is a sea cliff about ten kilometers long; the Pacific Coast Cycling Road starts at JR Chōshi Station and runs for around 1,400 kilometers along the Pacific coast. There are also different ways to experience the area: Geopark activities, a lighthouse and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views, as well as experiences at Yamasa Shoyu focused on production and tasting. When choosing, it may help to consider whether you want to focus on the landscape, views, geological themes or local production.

Coast and Geopark

The sea cliff 屏風ケ浦 stretches for about ten kilometers from 犬岩 in Chōshi to 刑部岬 in Asahi. These two place names locate the formation along a specific section of coast and give a sense of its extent between Chōshi and Asahi.

The Choshi Geopark offers geotours led by certified Geopark guides. At the Choshi Geopark Museum, you can learn about the formation of the Earth in Chōshi, as well as the ways of life, history and nature connected with it. The museum also displays fossils, including ammonites. In this way, the museum connects geological topics with subjects relating to Chōshi’s nature and history; ammonites are one specific example from the exhibitions. The geotours offer a different way to explore the area: they are led by certified guides.

Panoramas and Lighthouse Views

The building 地球の丸く見える丘展望館 stands on the summit of 愛宕山. At an elevation of 90 meters, it has a rooftop terrace with a 360-degree panorama, where the horizon appears curved at both ends. The ascent at 犬吠埼灯台 is described in specific terms: 99 spiral steps lead to the lantern room, from which you can look out over the Pacific Ocean. If you are choosing between these two viewing experiences, one offers a panorama from a rooftop terrace and the other a named flight of steps leading to a lighthouse view.

See, Smell and Taste Soy Sauce

At the Yamasa Shoyu Soy Sauce Aroma Experience Center, you can see, smell and taste three soy sauces: “丸大豆しょうゆ,” “生しょうゆ” and “減塩しょうゆ.” Yamasa Shoyu’s factory tour also includes the virtual experience “タップトーク.” It takes place in a room modeled on a vat measuring six meters across. Floor projections and sound show how moromi is transformed into soy sauce. The two activities have different focuses: the experience center centers on three varieties and their sensory qualities, while “タップトーク” focuses on the production process as it is depicted.

Chōshi as the Starting Point of a Coastal Route

The Pacific Coast Cycling Road starts at JR Chōshi Station and runs for around 1,400 kilometers along the Pacific coast to Kada Port in Wakayama. For cycling enthusiasts, this route places Chōshi within a wider coastal journey: the city is its starting point, while the other end of the route is in Wakayama. Alongside the individual Geopark, sightseeing and soy sauce experiences, you can also choose to take in a broader perspective on the Pacific coast.
