Yachimata combines harvest activities and regular events with traces of the O-Nari Kaido and a landscape shaped by rice fields. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you are mainly interested in agriculture and local markets or in local history and landscapes. Harvest activities depend on the season and availability; markets and festivals have set dates that may change.

Peanut Harvesting, Berries and Market Dates

At Ishibashi Farm, digging up Ōmasari peanuts is one of the activities on offer. Shin-chan Farm also offers digging up this variety, as well as various vegetable-harvesting experiences. A discount is available there for people with disabilities. Check seasonal availability and participation requirements before visiting.

There are other harvest activities in Yachimata City: Shingyōji Blueberry Orchard offers picking blueberries from 80 varieties. Morino Ichigo Tourist Farm offers strawberry picking in raised-bed cultivation. These activities complement the peanut experiences with other fruits and growing methods; here, too, it is advisable to check availability in advance.

The Yachimata Station North Exit Market takes place on the second Sunday of every month in the plaza at the north exit of JR Yachimata Station. Local producers sell a diverse range of goods there, and stalls from local businesses are also represented. The Yachimata Peanut Festival is held every September. The festival offers peanuts and Yachimata ginger lemonade to sample, along with regional specialties. Check the date for the relevant month or year before traveling.

Local History and Traces of the O-Nari Kaido

The Yachimata Local History Museum displays archaeological cultural artifacts found in Yachimata, as well as old documents donated by residents and folk items used in everyday life. The collection provides a focus on cultural history alongside the agricultural experiences.

The historic O-Nari Kaido connected Funabashi and Tōgane along a route of about 37 kilometers. Most of it has been altered since the Meiji era through the development of farmland and road improvements. In Yachimata City, three sections have been preserved in their original form and designated as municipal cultural properties: “御成街道跡”, “御成街道跡(風景谷の険)” and “御成街道の一里塚”. The “風景谷の険” section crosses a deep valley on the border between Yachimata City and Chiba City.

The Kamisuna milestone mound is one of three milestone mounds still preserved along the O-Nari Kaido. Such mounds served as markers for keeping the route straight during road construction. Historical accounts say that white flags were raised during the day and lanterns at night. A tradition at Enokido Ōmiya Shrine also dates back a long way: a traditional lion dance has been passed down there since the early Edo period. The preservation association suspended its activities in fiscal year 2016.

Rice Fields, Satoyama and a Cherry Tree Avenue

In western Yachimata City, a rural landscape shaped by Yatsu rice fields stretches between the Nekoya and Yōgusa districts. This Satoyama landscape also includes a colony of Katakuri flowers. The cherry tree avenue is also located in the Yōgusa and Nekoya districts: Somei Yoshino cherry trees line both sides of a municipal road for about two kilometers. The route is a distinctive landscape feature in its own right, alongside the rice fields.

Getting There and Planning

Yachimata City has the JR stations Yachimata and Enokido. The train ride to JR Chiba Station takes about 30 minutes, and the ride to JR Tokyo Station takes about an hour. These are approximate times and may change with transport services; check connections for your travel date. This comparison gives a general indication of travel to the city, not of travel within it.

If you want to plan your stay around events or harvest activities, check their specific dates and availability in advance. Local history and landscapes offer different points of interest from harvest activities and festival dates.
