Barcellona Pozzo Di Gotto offers a variety of starting points for a culture-focused trip: religious buildings tell the story of different construction periods, museums are devoted to history and craftsmanship, and Parco Museo Jalari brings together art, nature and spiritual symbolism. When making your selection, it is worth considering these themes separately: would you like to focus on architectural details and building history, or are you more interested in historic professions and nature experiences?

Churches and architectural history

The Basilica minore di San Sebastiano was built in 1936. Its distinctly Neoclassical façade gives the building a clear architectural identity. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista has a longer building history: it was founded in 1635, expanded between 1751 and 1754, and consecrated in 1821. Its distinctive features include bell towers in the Arab-Norman style with onion-shaped roofs, as well as Baroque-influenced buttresses. The church was declared a national monument in 1969.

The two churches have different emphases: at San Sebastiano, the focus is on the Neoclassical façade of a building constructed in 1936; San Giovanni Battista brings together several construction periods and distinct architectural forms. This shows that church architecture cannot be reduced to a single style or period of origin.

The Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta also has a complex building history. In 1859, it was rebuilt in its present form on the same site and completed in 1863. After suffering severe damage in the 1908 earthquake, it was almost entirely rebuilt; this reconstruction was completed in 1938. The Duomo houses a 16th-century marble sculpture of San Vito. It also has wheelchair access.

Art, nature and craftsmanship at Parco Museo Jalari

At Parco Museo Jalari, the themed trail “Un sentiero verso il cielo” brings together art, nature and spiritual symbolism. Nature is also reflected in the park’s role as a refuge for many animal species. Some migratory birds regularly use it as a resting place. The ethnographic museum, meanwhile, explores traditional professions and craft workshops. In the same park, artistic and spiritual references, nature and traditional working worlds sit side by side as distinct themes.

A reservation at least one week in advance is required for guided tours at Parco Museo Jalari. Tours are offered in Italian, English, French and Spanish. Dates and arrangements may vary; if you are planning a tour, check the current arrangements and book with the required advance notice.

Museums in historic buildings and gardens

The Museo Etnostorico Nello Cassata comprises Casa di Manno, the Cassata family’s country estate, as well as two floors of a building dating from the late 19th century. These housed the museum’s first historic collection. The site therefore connects a specific group of buildings with the history of the museum itself.

The Museo Epicentro is located near Barcellona. Its garden, with small stone paths, offers the chance to experience art beneath walnut and citrus trees. In contrast to the Museo Etnostorico Nello Cassata’s historic buildings, the garden paths and trees shape the art space described here. Those interested in art can thus find two different ways to engage with it: through its connection with a historic estate and its floors of buildings, or through the experience of art in a garden.
