The Aeolian Islands lie in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, north of Sicily’s northern coast and opposite the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina. Their volcanic formations preserve an outstanding record of the formation and destruction of volcanic islands. The islands are inscribed under UNESCO criterion (viii); their volcanic morphology is considered a classic example in the development of volcanology. Landscape and geological history are closely intertwined here.

The archipelago consists of seven main islands: Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Alicudi, Filicudi, Stromboli and Panarea. Five smaller islets—Basiluzzo, Dattilo, Lisca Nera, Bottaro and Lisca Bianca—complete the group. This distinction provides an initial overview before you take a closer look at the islands’ individual natural and cultural attractions.

Volcanic Landscapes and Nature Conservation

Volcanic activity varies across the islands. Stromboli is the only island in the archipelago with ongoing volcanic activity. On Salina, the Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri Nature Reserve protects the Mediterranean flora and fauna of the extinct volcanoes Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri. Thus, ongoing volcanic activity and the natural landscapes of extinct volcanoes coexist across the island group. All the Aeolian Islands except Lipari are designated nature reserves, in whole or in part, under the European Habitats and Birds Directives.

History and Landscape on Lipari

On Lipari, historic buildings and a volcanic landscape meet. The Castello di Lipari includes an old Norman cloister; the Cattedrale di Lipari dates from the 13th century. There are numerous white pumice beaches along the coast. The Terme San Calogero also preserve evidence of the island’s long history: a tholos oven from the Early Bronze Age, as well as Greek and Roman pools and channels for conducting hot sulfur water. A small church on Lipari offers an exceptional view of Salina, Filicudi and Alicudi.

Salina: Nature, Wine and Local Cuisine

On Salina, nature conservation, agriculture and religious architecture are close together. The fertile hollow of Valdichiesa is planted with Malvasia vineyards. In Pollara stands the Chiesa di Sant'Onofrio, an example of local religious architecture dating from 1853. Malvasia delle Lipari is a naturally sweet passito wine produced exclusively on the Aeolian Islands. In Lingua on Salina, you can also find “u pani cunzatu”: bread topped with caper pesto, almonds, grilled aubergines, cucunci, tomatoes, mint and grated baked ricotta. The wine and dish showcase two different sides of the island’s cuisine.

Volcanic Experiences and Islets

On Vulcano, the climb to the crater offers panoramic views of the island and the six other Aeolian Islands. Volcanic conditions can change, so check local restrictions before setting out. In the open sea around Vulcano, there are sulfurous areas with warm water, considered natural bathing and thermal experiences. Follow local guidance there, as these conditions can also change.

On Stromboli, guides lead nighttime ascents gradually toward the summit, depending on eruptive phases. Access to the summit depends on volcanic conditions and the official rules in force. Boat trips around Panarea can explore the five small islets of Basiluzzo, Dattilo, Lisca Nera, Bottaro and Lisca Bianca up close. There are intense fumaroles underwater near Panarea, described in connection with diving activities. Experiences therefore vary by island: crater panoramas on Vulcano, guided nighttime ascents on Stromboli and trips around the islets near Panarea.
