The Chiesa di Santa Maria dell'Acquabona was built in the 15th century. Its Baroque structure features medieval elements on the façade and bell tower: the stone portal has a round arch, while the masonry bell tower has Gothic arcades. These specific features make it possible to describe the building without reducing it to a single style label.

Origins and architectural evidence

The name San Biase is said to derive from a hermitage dedicated to Saint Biagio, an Armenian bishop, which formed the original nucleus of the village. The place name thus links the religious dedication with a traditional explanation of the village’s origins.

A stone wayside cross dating from 1648 stands in the Borgo Croce district. Outside the walls is the 17th-century Cappella di San Biagio. The Cappella di Santa Pia is also one of San Biase’s monuments worth visiting. Together, the cross and chapels offer different points of reference for understanding the town’s architectural heritage.

Religious traditions

On February 3, the rite of blessing the throat by anointing takes place in the Chiesa di Santa Maria dell'Acquabona. The feast day of San Biagio is one of San Biase’s traditional events. If you are including religious traditions in your travel plans, February 3 provides a date to keep in mind for the rite; the feast day offers another cultural point of reference.

Bosco Maccavillo and the surrounding area

Bosco Maccavillo has a picnic area as well as a nature trail of the same name. This gives you two different ways to enjoy time outdoors there: a picnic area and a nature trail. The nearby Tratturo Celano-Foggia is also part of the area around San Biase. This distinguishes the specific attractions at Bosco from this nearby point of interest in the wider area.

Local cuisine and a discovery

San Biase has an agricultural tradition associated with the patata lunga, which is recognized as a traditional Italian agri-food product (P.A.T.). A typical dish is “sagne alla z’F’Lmèn”, a durum-wheat pasta served with pork sauce. These represent two distinct aspects of local food culture: a recognized agricultural product and a particular pasta dish with named ingredients.

The “Cavaliere di San Biase” was found in the area of San Biase and is on display at the Museo Sannitico di Campobasso; the exhibition venue may change. If you would like to include the exhibit in your visit, check in advance whether it is still on display there.

Getting there and finding accommodation

San Biase can be reached via provincial road no. 73, which runs from Sant’Angelo Limosano to San Biase. The town can also be reached from Trivento via Contrada Codacchio. The two access routes differ in their starting points and the routes named for each.

If you are considering San Biase as a place to stay, you can choose based on your main interests: architectural history and religious traditions, the agricultural roots of the local food culture, or the natural setting at Bosco Maccavillo. When looking for a holiday apartment, this can help you match your stay to the topics that interest you most.
