An ancient Samnite centre, a Roman theatre and routes used for seasonal transhumance give Molise an unusual historical setting. Sepino was a Samnite centre on transhumance routes and later took on monumental Roman forms. The Museum of the City and Territory of Sepino is housed in 18th-century rural buildings built on the curved structures of a Roman theatre. Its collection ranges from prehistoric material to the Middle Ages. Architectural history and a broad chronological span of finds thus come together in one place.

Samnite and Roman Traces

Campobasso also offers a different perspective on the region’s history. Since 1995, the Museo archeologico nazionale di Campobasso has been housed in Palazzo Mazzarotta, an 18th-century building in the historic centre. The permanent exhibition is arranged chronologically and thematically; it includes material from the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. The first floor focuses on the Samnites, their sanctuaries, trade and tombs. The collection also includes notable votive statuettes of Hercules. The layout moves from early periods represented by the finds to the themes that shed light on Samnite life and burial practices.

Tratturi and Landscapes

The tratturi are ancient grassy paths associated with the seasonal transhumance of sheep flocks. Their network covers essentially all of Molise and offers distinctive routes through the region. This cultural landscape therefore extends beyond individual places. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Lakes, mountains and nature reserves are part of Molise’s mountain landscapes. Panoramic views alternate with striking landscape features inland; how far you can see may vary depending on the season. Campitello Matese is also visited by cyclists and climbers. The activities available there depend on seasonal conditions and local offerings.

Art, Excursions and Coast

The MAACK in Casacalenda brings together a village setting, woodland and contemporary art in an open-air museum. It features 21 works by Italian and international artists, as well as permanent or temporary installations. Visitors can explore the grounds along the red, blue or green circular routes, or join a local guided tour. As individual installations and visitor arrangements may change, check the current catalogue and local information before your visit.

The park authority’s Molise Tour combines a short walk with views of Lake Castel San Vincenzo and visits to the Zampogna Museum and the Abbey of Castel San Vincenzo. Check dates and arrangements in advance. Along the coast, equipped beaches offer water sports such as surfing, windsurfing, diving and stand-up paddleboarding. Conditions and availability vary by season; check them before your trip.

Regional Experiences and Getting There

Culinary experiences include guided truffle-hunting walks and cheese tastings in a maturing cellar. These activities are organised year-round; confirm availability locally. As for getting there, Molise has no airports of its own. Ground connections to the region are available from the nearby airports in Rome, Naples or Pescara. Molise can also be reached by train or car. According to the regional tourism portal, the roads are particularly suited to travellers on two wheels. Check current connections and timetables when planning your journey.
