A garden where water also creates music adds a special touch to Latium: Villa d’Este is a masterpiece of Italian garden design. Fountains, nymphaea, grottoes and water features shape the scene, complemented by hydraulic music. In 2001, the villa was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, carefully designed gardens meet technical ingenuity—a starting point for exploring a region where different eras have left their mark.

Villas and Ancient Stories

Villa Adriana offers a different vision of ancient architecture. Built between 117 and 138 AD as a retreat for Emperor Hadrian, it was designed as an ideal city. Its architecture brings together traditions from ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt. The remains of around 30 buildings cover 120 hectares in the Tiburtine Hills near Tivoli. Ancient architecture here is thus not just a single building, but an extensive complex with connections to several cultures.

Etruscan Art and a Tradition in Viterbo

The necropolis of Tarquinia offers another perspective on antiquity: its large-scale wall paintings depict aspects of Etruscan life, death and religious beliefs. In Cerveteri, the Banditaccia necropolis is a site of funerary architecture that was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. The two sites explore different aspects of Etruscan culture, from painted scenes to tomb architecture.

In Viterbo, the procession of the Macchina di Santa Rosa passes through the historic center every year on the evening of September 3. If you plan to attend the procession, check the specific arrangements before your trip. Its fixed date sets this tradition apart from a visit focused on ancient sites and their history.

Lakes, Protected Areas and Landscapes

Volcanic lakes, artificial bodies of water and small basins are part of a landscape also shaped by villages and fertile areas. Latium’s protected-area system brings together reserves, parks and natural monuments, along with state-protected areas, national parks, state reserves and marine protected areas. In Monti Lucretili Regional Park, the Lagustelli area is designated as an internationally protected wetland under the Ramsar Convention.

Lake Bolsena is Europe’s largest volcanic basin and Latium’s largest lake; it covers 110 square kilometers. Lake Turano has a different origin: it is an artificial lake in the province of Rieti, on the edge of the Monte Navegna e Monte Cervia Nature Reserve. The Cascate di Monte Gelato in the Treja Valley also combine scenic appeal with historical and natural character; they are a destination for excursions.

Hiking Trails, Coast and Winter in the Mountains

For those who want to explore on foot, the Cammino Naturale dei Parchi offers a route with clearly defined stages: it is 430 kilometers long, comprises 25 stages in total and passes through 42 municipalities. It connects Latium, represented by Rome, with L’Aquila in Abruzzo and crosses four regional parks, two regional nature reserves and Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. You can hike individual stages or choose a trek lasting two or more days; many access points can be reached by public transport.

The Via Francigena del Nord offers another route to follow. In Latium, it passes through 18 municipalities, including Acquapendente, Bolsena, Sutri and Viterbo. The region’s Tyrrhenian coast stretches for more than 300 kilometers and offers opportunities for swimming, water sports and diving. The Terminillo ski area offers a different seasonal focus: between elevations of 1,500 and 2,000 meters, a cable car and three chairlifts serve 40 kilometers of downhill ski runs. Check current lift and slope operations before your visit.

Discover Regional Products

You can discover traditional PAT products by visiting farms and workshops, as well as at farmers’ markets. In Latium, different kinds of discovery go hand in hand: garden design and archaeology, waterscapes, walking routes and regional products.
