Yahel offers several ways to spend time outdoors: two circular trails, each about five kilometers long, differ in elevation gain, terrain and views; there are also singletracks near the kibbutz and a marked jeep trail in the surrounding area. So the choice depends on more than just the distance. The surface, mode of travel and access conditions also affect which option best suits your plans.
Hiking around Yahel
A circular trail about 5 km long starts at Nahal Yaelon and climbs a challenging ascent to a viewpoint. From there, the view extends across the entire Kibbutz Yahel and the Arava. The route then runs through a dry streambed, ends near the southern part of the kibbutz and returns to Yahel via the â€ś×ˇ×™× ×’×ś יהל”. Most of the circular trail passes through shaded areas, so it may also be suitable for early summer hikes. Heat and trail conditions can vary; check them before setting out.
“שביל החילזון” is also about 5 km long and partly follows the â€ś×ˇ×™× ×’×ś יהל”. The loop leads through the southern date-palm grove and open terrain to a hidden stream with boulbusim rock formations. The path between the rocks in the stream is intended for experienced hikers. Both circular trails are similar in length but differ in character: the first is defined by its challenging ascent and viewpoint, while the second features a rocky stream section and is classified for experienced hikers.
A hill a few meters north of Yahel offers views of the Arava and Nahal Yaelon. This provides another vantage point in addition to the view from the circular trail’s viewpoint.
Access at Nahal Yaelon
Nahal Yaelon runs through a military firing zone. Access must be arranged in advance; free access without prior arrangements is possible on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays. These conditions are relevant to the circular trail that starts at Nahal Yaelon. Before your visit, check the current access conditions and confirm what arrangements are required.
Singletracks and jeep trail
The Yahel–Neot Semadar section of the Israel National Bike Trail begins at Kibbutz Yahel and heads south on the “הבולבוסים” singletrack. The Yahel–Ketura singletrack starts at the entrance to Kibbutz Yahel. Nearby singletracks also range from family-friendly routes to technically challenging trails for experienced riders. Trail conditions and availability may change; check them before riding.
In the surrounding area, a marked jeep trail runs for about 16 km along Nahal Yaelon to Route 40 at the entrance to Neve Harif. It is passable only with off-road vehicles and is rated moderately difficult. At about 16 km, it is considerably longer than the two circular trails. Check the route and current conditions before driving.
