North Sumatra in Indonesia combines a volcano-shaped landscape with Batak culture, water activities and jungle experiences. Lake Toba, historic buildings and different ways to explore on foot or on the water offer several perspectives on the region. When planning your trip, it helps to first decide which of these experiences you want to focus on.

Volcanic landscapes and Lake Toba

Lake Toba is the world's largest volcanic lake. Its landscape is connected to the history of immense volcanic forces: the Toba Caldera UNESCO Global Geopark in North Sumatra was shaped by one of the most powerful eruptions in Earth's history. This geological distinction offers a focus for trips centered on landscapes and nature.

The Eden Park botanical garden is also located in the geopark. It showcases endemic plants from the Toba region, including Andaliman, Toba orchids and pitcher plants. At Mount Sibayak, geothermal steam rises from an active crater, and the mountain offers views of the sunrise. These two places offer different insights into North Sumatra's nature: one showcases the plant life of the Toba region, the other an active volcano.

Water experiences, hiking and jungle

On Lake Toba, you can sail or rent a boat to experience the lake from the water. Boat trips offer a different perspective on Samosir Island and the surrounding hills. You can also kayak along the shore around Samosir Island. The same lake therefore offers different ways to experience its waters, without following a set route.

If you want to include a hike, Puncak Bukit Holbung has a trail with views of Lake Toba. It is considered relatively easy and leads through green hills. Bukit Lawang offers a very different kind of nature experience: trekking takes you through dense jungle, orangutans are its main attraction, and visitors can raft through the river's wild rapids. The contrast can help you choose: Lake Toba and Bukit Holbung offer lakeside and hilly landscapes, while Bukit Lawang is known for jungle and river.

Batak culture and historic buildings

Traditional Batak houses are showcased in the Toba Caldera UNESCO Global Geopark. The centuries-old wooden buildings feature intricate Gorga carvings, symbolic colors, low Bara spaces for animal cages and conical roofs. Ulos is also part of Batak Toba cultural tradition: the cloth is made using the ikat technique and used in various ceremonial rituals. It symbolizes love, prayers and blessings.

Another cultural highlight is Bawomataluo in Kabupaten Nias Selatan, North Sumatra, at 324 meters above sea level. The stone-jumping tradition of Fahombo has been preserved there in its original form and attracts visitors to North Sumatra. The village is also home to the traditional Omo Sebua, the king's house, which is more than 200 years old. In Medan, Istana Maimun brings together stylistic motifs from Malay, Middle Eastern and European traditions and is a tourist attraction.

Cuisine and specialties

Medan serves as the main gateway to many destinations in North Sumatra and is also home to a cultural attraction, Istana Maimun. Merdeka Walk, meanwhile, is a lively dining area offering local specialties such as Soto Medan and Bihun Bebek. Individual vendors and offerings may change; if a particular dish is important to your visit, it is worth checking what's currently available.

Choosing hotels based on your travel interests

Medan's role as a gateway offers another point of reference for planning.
