For a cultural trip to Malang, it is worth exploring its different urban histories and collections. The municipality of Kota Malang is home to colorful neighborhoods, historic buildings and museums with a range of focuses. Public spaces complement this selection with opportunities for exercise, as well as places for play and learning. The wider Malang destination offers further cultural themes.

Culture and city life in Kota Malang

Kampung Warna Warni Jodipan is located in Jodipan, Blimbing, within the municipality of Kota Malang. This visitor attraction is characterized by brightly painted houses. The neighborhood is considered clean and welcoming; visitors experience a densely built-up yet distinctive urban setting here. The design of the houses and the character of the neighborhood make Jodipan a different kind of cultural experience from the museums’ collections.

Kampung Kayutangan is a historic landmark: its oldest building was constructed in 1870. The Mpu Purwa Museum has a different focus and holds a collection of Hindu-Buddhist artifacts. A specific year of construction and a collection of religious and cultural objects thus offer distinct ways of engaging with history.

The Museum Musik Indonesia is dedicated to a different kind of collection. On the second floor of Gedung Kesenian Gajayana at Jalan Nusakambangan No. 19 in Kota Malang, it displays records, music cassettes, music magazines and posters of Indonesian singers. Unlike the Mpu Purwa, its focus is on music-related objects and printed materials. The two museums therefore offer clearly distinct themes for a cultural stay.

Public spaces also have different focuses. Visitors usually use the walking paths at Taman Singha Merjosari as a jogging route. Taman Cerdas Trunojoyo is designed as a place where children can play, learn and interact with one another. Here, exercise on walking paths contrasts with a space explicitly intended for play, learning and interaction.

In the wider Malang destination

Kampung Budaya Polowijen preserves local cultural heritage through Topeng dance, mask-making, batik and historic sites. Visitors can learn about Topeng Malangan, batik and Topeng dance. Confirm specific visitor arrangements locally in advance.

The Museum Pendidikan Kota Malang presents the history of education in Kota Malang from the past to the present. Its historic educational objects include traditional clothing, old typewriters, old school desks and traditional games. The collection thus connects the history of education with tangible objects from everyday life and learning; its composition may change.

Kelenteng Eng An Kiong is a building in Kota Malang designated as cultural heritage. It is also a Tridharma temple used for Confucian, Buddhist and Taoist worship. Its religious function and its designation as cultural heritage describe two distinct aspects of the same place.

Architecture and public spaces

Malang City Hall was built around 1927 during the Dutch colonial period. In the center of Kota Malang is Kampoeng Heritage Kajoetangan, a cultural heritage destination whose character is defined by well-preserved old houses. Both places point to historic buildings, but in different forms: a city hall from the colonial period on the one hand, and a destination shaped by preserved houses on the other.

The Kawasan Ijen area is in the center of Kota Malang and extends roughly from Jalan Ijen to the cathedral. Idjen Boulevard is a landmark of Kota Malang: the street is designed as a divided boulevard with a planted median. Alun-Alun Merdeka Malang, in turn, was redeveloped as a modern, pedestrian-friendly city park while retaining its historic function.
