Along Hellnar’s coast, protected nature, rocks shaped by the surf and the history of an important fishing harbor come together. This gives you several different focal points when planning your trip: coastal geology, birdlife, a challenging hike and Hellnar’s past as a harbor town. Which one matters most will determine whether you’d rather spend your time exploring the landscape, going for a hike or learning about the town’s history.

Coast, Cave and Lava Field

Stapar Beach and Hellnar have been protected since 1979. The surf has shaped rock formations there and carved fissures into the rock. The area is also home to a diverse and abundant birdlife. This brings visible traces of the surf and a diverse habitat into view in the same place. For nature enthusiasts, geology and wildlife are two distinct aspects to discover here.

In Baðstofa Cave, the colors change noticeably with the light and the tides. Here, the changing colors take center stage, while the rock formations and fissures shaped by the surf are the distinctive natural features of the beach.

Hellnahraun extends the view beyond the shore. The large lava field lies between Arnarstapi and Hellnar and stretches from the sea to the glacier. Unlike the individual rock formations on the beach, Hellnahraun is an extensive landscape.

Bárðarlaug is nearby, west of the road to Hellnar, and was protected as a natural monument in 1980. The beach and Bárðarlaug have two separate protection designations: the beach has been protected since 1979, while Bárðarlaug has had natural monument status since 1980.

Hike Between Hellnar and Arnarstapi

The hiking trail between Arnarstapi and Hellnar is 2.5 km long, takes about an hour and is rated challenging. When planning, consider the distance, approximate duration and difficulty rating together: the number of kilometers alone doesn’t give you the full picture of the hike. Check conditions and the current route status before setting out, as both can change.

The hike is a specific route with an approximate time frame and difficulty rating; the lava field, by contrast, describes a landscape. This distinction can help with trip planning: do you want to focus on a challenging hike, or are you mainly interested in the geology of the area? These two focal points offer different ways to shape your visit.

Fishing History and a Café by the Shore

For centuries, Hellnar was one of the region’s largest fishing harbors. Its long-standing role as a harbor adds a historical dimension to Hellnar alongside its geology and nature.

Café Fjöruhúsið is located on the shore in Hellnar. Its offerings include fish soup, homemade bread, cakes, and waffles with jam and cream. The menu adds a culinary point of interest to the landscape and history. Check opening status and seasonal availability before your trip; the menu may also change.
