Flúdir can be explored through two different bathing options: a 25-metre swimming pool in town and the natural pool Secret Lagoon at Hverahólmi near Flúdir. There is also a recreation area, outdoor activities and a sculpture with a clearly dated local history. When choosing accommodation, it is helpful to distinguish between places in town and those in the nearby area.
Swimming in town and in a geothermal setting
The swimming pool in Flúdir has two hot pools and a natural steam sauna. Together with the 25-metre pool, it offers several different areas in one place. For planning purposes, this bathing spot can be considered part of the town; Secret Lagoon is a separate natural pool at Hverahólmi near Flúdir.
Secret Lagoon, locally known as Gamla laugin, has a geothermal pool where the water stays at 38 to 40 °C all year round. Several hot springs are located around the pool. A path around Secret Lagoon allows visitors to safely observe boiling and bubbling springs. The small geyser Litli Geysir is right beside the pool and erupts every few minutes. The two bathing spots therefore differ not only in location but also in their surroundings: one features pools and a steam sauna, while the other is a natural pool with springs and a geyser.
Outdoor recreation and golf options
Lækjargarðurinn is a recreation area in Flúdir. It includes, among other things, an inflatable air cushion and a barbecue shelter for outdoor picnics. The availability of these facilities may change; if they are important to your visit, check in advance.
A 9-hole disc golf course has opened in Flúdir. Its first hole is next to Félagsheimili Hrunamanna in the town centre. Four kilometres south of Flúdir is Markavöllur, an 18-hole football golf course between Miðfell and Galtafell. It is set in a rural landscape with mountain views and a glacier in the background. If you want to include Markavöllur in your plans, check the latest operating information in advance.
Sculpture and a landmark in the town centre
The sculpture Alda aldanna by Einar Jónsson, a sculptor from Galtafell, now stands in front of Félagsheimili Hrunamanna. It was unveiled in Flúdir on 17 June 1977. The building is also a landmark in the town centre: the first hole of the disc golf course is right next to it. The artwork and the leisure activity thus share a specific point of reference, without requiring a route or walking tour.
Choose the right focus for your stay
When choosing accommodation in Flúdir, it helps to distinguish the places by their location. The swimming pool and Lækjargarðurinn are in town; Secret Lagoon is at Hverahólmi near Flúdir, and Markavöllur is four kilometres to the south. The distance given for Markavöllur provides a sense of its location, but does not indicate current opening hours or travel time.
