A pond in the heart of Raufarhöfn, a coastal loop trail leading to the Ásinn ridge, and a stone church by the harbor showcase the range of experiences combining nature and local history. The Arctic Henge is nearby. The paths and scenic spots extend from the town center to the rising loop trail.
A Loop Trail Between the Coast and the Ásinn Ridge
The loop trail from Raufarhöfn to the Ásinn ridge starts at the swimming pool or the campsite. From there, it follows the coast through the older part of town to the harbor quay, climbs to the Ásinn ridge, and returns to the chosen starting point. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Birdlife and Scenery by the Water
Kottjörn lies in the heart of Raufarhöfn. Its small island is home to diverse birdlife; birdlife is often especially diverse along the coastal section of the loop trail, too. The pond island and the coast thus offer two distinct landscapes for birdlife. The quiet village setting also lends itself to walks, fishing, and birdwatching.
Höfðinn is a natural attraction. In its surroundings, you can walk and take in the landscape and the sea. The Raufarhafnarviti lighthouse also stands on the hill, serving maritime traffic.
Church, Information Towers, and the Arctic Henge
Raufarhafnarkirkja is a stone church dating from 1928. It stands at the end of the harbor, where the town’s first settlement began, and at the northern end of town beside the working area of the small boat harbor. Three information towers in town each have four panels about local plant life, history, and buildings; the information project may be expanded. The church and the Arctic Henge offer different points of interest: the church stands by the harbor where the first settlement began, while the monument is inspired by Norse mythology, astronomy, and the dramatic light of the Arctic.
The Arctic Henge (Heimskautsgerðið) can be reached from Raufarhöfn by car or on a short walk. Road conditions may vary by season, and the state of construction may change. Check road conditions before your visit and find out about the current state of construction.
Camping and Local Facilities
Tjaldsvæðið Raufarhöfn campsite is in a quiet location by a pond and just a few minutes’ walk from the town’s services. Facilities include toilets, a washbasin, tables, benches, and electrical hookups for caravans and motorhomes. Facilities may change; check before your trip. Next to the campsite is a sports center with a swimming pool, hot tub, steam bath, and fitness area, which guests can use. Operating conditions may vary by season.
The campsite is also one of the starting points for the loop trail; the town’s services are just a few minutes’ walk away. If you’re considering the campsite as part of your travel plans, check both its current facilities and the sports center’s seasonal operating conditions.
