Seals, local history and a marked hiking trail give Hvammstangi several distinct points of interest. To decide whether to stay here overnight, three questions are especially helpful: Are you interested in marine life and its cultural significance, historic sites along a route, or a swimming pool with an outdoor pool? Your answers point to clearly distinct things to do in the town, rather than a single set itinerary.

Seals and history in Hvammstangi

The Seal Museum provides information about seals on Iceland’s coasts and in its coastal waters, as well as seal species from around the world. Its exhibitions also focus on wildlife in the Hvammstangi area, particularly birds and marine life. The museum also explores the role of seals in Icelandic culture and traditions, including seal hunting. Nature and cultural history are presented side by side: seals feature both as part of the animal world and in connection with human traditions.

BardĂşsa in Hvammstangi offers a different historical perspective. The remains of an old trading business from the early 20th century have been preserved there. While the Seal Museum explores wildlife and seal culture, BardĂşsa focuses on local trade history. The two points of interest therefore have different themes: the relationship between people and seals, and the traces of a business from an earlier era.

Hiking route to Kirkjuhvammur

The marked Hvammstangi–Kirkjuhvammur hiking route starts next to the Kaupfélag grocery store in Hvammstangi. It leads to the old church at Kirkjuhvammur, where an information sign tells visitors about the church and the settlement of the surrounding area. The route also leads to Iceland’s only water-powered grain mill. The mill and church give the trail a cultural and historical focus, while its marked route provides a clear starting point in town.

A short distance past the church, the route offers a view over Hvammstangi. This viewpoint complements the historic sites with a perspective on the town itself. If you are choosing between the museum and the hiking trail, they offer different ways to explore: the museum’s exhibitions focus on wildlife and cultural history, while the trail leads to specific historic sites and a view over the town.

Harbour and getting oriented

The Seal Museum is located at Hvammstangi harbour, four minutes from Route 1. The Icelandic Seal Center, which houses a tourist information office, is also at the harbour. For getting oriented, both the museum and its exhibitions and the tourist information office at the Seal Center are useful. Both are located at the harbour, but they are not the same place to visit.

Swimming pool with an outdoor pool and steam bath

Hvammstangi’s swimming pool adds another local amenity to the cultural and historical attractions and hiking route. The outdoor pool measures 25 m × 11 m. The swimming pool also has a whirlpool with water massage and a steam bath. The dimensions give a clear idea of the pool’s size; the whirlpool and steam bath are additional facilities. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether exhibitions, a marked trail with historic sites, or the swimming pool facilities matter most to you.
