Vopnafjörður lies on the long, narrow peninsula of Kolbeinstangi, which extends into the fjord. Local history, hiking trails, and kayaking tours offer different ways to shape your stay. The location is also important when planning your arrival: all roads to and from Vopnafjörður cross mountain passes. By planning ahead, you can explore both culture and nature while taking road conditions into account.
Local history on a walking tour and in historic buildings
The Vappað um Vopnafjörð walking tour presents historical information about Vopnafjörður on 15 signs around town. Brochures are available at major tourist locations, and a smartphone guide is also available through the Wapp app. Check whether the app is available before your trip. The walking tour provides a thread through the town’s history, while the churches and cultural center bring individual historical details to life.
Vopnafjarðarkirkja was put into use in 1903 and is a protected building. It was designed by Björgólfur Brynjólfsson of Skjöldólfsstaðir in Breiðdal. The altarpiece also has a distinct connection to Icelandic art: it was created by Jóhannes Kjarval and is titled “Frelsarinn talar til fólksins.” A visit thus brings both the building’s history and a specific work of art into focus.
Kaupvangur House was built in 1882 and fully restored to its original condition in 2005. Today, it hosts various cultural activities in Vopnafjörður. The Kaupvangur cultural center is also home to the East Iceland Emigration Center. It offers genealogical services, helps people search for relatives, and supports them in making a connection with the present. Its services also include arranging trips to Iceland, meetings with relatives, and visits to the places where ancestors lived. The center is therefore particularly suited to travelers who want to combine family history with a trip.
Hiking, coastline, and nature
The Hlíðarendi trail is described as easy and suitable for most people. It passes the still clearly visible ruins of the former Hlíðarendi farm. The trail description thus combines a hike with a specific historical site. More trails run across Hraunin above Vopnafjörður and are also suitable for most people. The two trail areas offer different points of interest: at Hlíðarendi, the ruins are an explicit feature of the route, while at Hraunin, the trails themselves are the main attraction.
Lónin lies north of town. The area is protected because of its rich wildlife, and special conditions apply to its protection. Along the coast, Fuglabjarganes is also on Iceland’s nature conservation list because of its varied coastline and abundant birdlife. A six-kilometer circular trail runs along the beach there to the headland. The terrain can be wet after rain, which is useful to know when planning a hike.
The old family farm Bustarfell in Hofsárdalur, near Vopnafjörður, is another option for an excursion in the area. The centuries-old Icelandic turf house has red gables and a grass-covered roof; today, it houses a museum. Its historic style of construction sets it apart from the buildings in town and adds another example of Icelandic architecture to the stories found there.
Kayaking and golf
Saga Kayak is a small, family-run kayak rental business in Vopnafjörður. Its kayak tours are suitable for both beginners and experienced paddlers. If you want to include an activity on the water during your stay, this is an option for a range of experience levels.
Golf is another local leisure activity: Vopnafjörður has a nine-hole golf course. Vopnafjörður Golf Course – Skálavöllur is partly situated on a steep slope and can be challenging for players. Playing conditions may vary by season. The course offers a different focus from the hiking trails; when deciding whether to play a round, consider both its hillside location and the changing conditions throughout the year.
Getting there and finding a place to stay
A nearby mountain road is Hellisheiði eystri, which reaches an altitude of about 665 meters and runs between Vopnafjörður and Fljótsdalshérað. It is open to all vehicles in summer; in winter, it is closed and not maintained. Check conditions before driving. Since the other roads to Vopnafjörður also cross mountain passes, seasonal road conditions are an important part of planning your trip.
Vopnafjörður Camping Ground is centrally located among the hills in town and offers views over the fjord. Facilities include toilets, showers, running water, and barbecue facilities; basic services are within walking distance. Facilities may change, so check before your trip. When choosing a place to stay, you can take into account both its location in town and its view over the fjord, as well as the facilities that matter to you.
