In Rezi, a long history of winemaking and stone heritage go hand in hand with opportunities to spend time outdoors. Riesling became a hallmark of the area in the 19th century, while local sandstone supported a significant stone industry. Historic statues, stone crosses, and tombstones preserve different aspects of this past. A yoga park and hiking trails near Rezi Castle complement the cultural focus with a range of outdoor activities.

Winemaking and Local Tradition

In the mid-19th century, Rezi pastor Ambrus Mihály taught residents the proper methods of winemaking and encouraged the first Riesling plantings. Riesling became a defining feature of the landscape, which is why the area was called Rizlingország. Winemaking, wine production, and the gastronomy associated with them continue to play an important role in preserving Rezi’s traditions.

An association organizes professional and tourist programs intended to help preserve the traditions and cultural values of Rezi’s vineyards. The programs also introduce and promote winemaking, wine culture, and local values. In this way, the local wine tradition encompasses both cultivation and production, as well as the gastronomy associated with them.

At Nyitott Pincék Éjszakája on August 1, 2020, visitors could experience wines from local wineries and dishes prepared according to artisanal traditions. The event offered insights into Rezi’s wine, gastronomic, and agricultural traditions. The date places this specific example in time and connects wine culture with other agricultural and culinary customs.

Stone and Historical Heritage

A significant stone industry developed in the 19th century based on local sandstone. Several statues and stone crosses from the first half of the 19th century still stand in Rezi today. The history of the industry and the surviving heritage reveal different sides of the stone tradition: the importance of a local material and stone works that remain standing in the village to this day.

The cemetery behind the church contains intricately crafted tombstones made from Rezi sandstone that are over 100 years old. The oldest abandoned objects were also incorporated into the cemetery’s retaining wall to protect them from deterioration and enhance the entrance to the cemetery. Thus, stone is present in the cemetery both in carefully crafted tombstones and as a means of preservation.

Another historical landmark is the thatched-roof Gyöngyösi betyárcsárda below Almástető. It was built in the early 18th century as an estate tavern and was still used as a csárda about 200 years ago. Its construction and later use as a csárda mark different periods in the building’s history.

Time Outdoors

Hídi-Pihenőhely features a yoga park beneath shady trees, designed for outdoor relaxation. The mountain trails around Rezi Castle are well suited to hiking. The two options offer different focuses: the yoga park is for relaxation, while the mountain trails offer active hiking.

When choosing activities, you can therefore opt for either a peaceful break outdoors or a hike. The history of winemaking and the stone heritage complement these outdoor options with local cultural history. Rezi thus combines historical themes focused on different aspects of the area with a variety of ways to spend time outside.
