Csesznek combines a castle with centuries of history, a small gorge with distinctive rock formations, and trails leading to different destinations. When choosing what to do, it helps to distinguish between local history, nature and via ferrata: you can visit the castle and Jewish cemetery, explore Kőmosó Gorge or choose one of the routes described here.
Castle and local history
Csesznek Castle is first mentioned in writing in the 13th century. The Garai family remodelled the castle in the Gothic style, making it an important knight’s castle. Csesznek Castle still offers guided tours to visitors. Check the exact availability of tours before your trip.
The Jewish cemetery “Zsidó temető a múltból” lies in the southeast of Csesznek, at the eastern foot of the castle and beside Kőmosó Gorge. It has a history spanning more than 100 years and has not been in use for about a century. The castle and cemetery thus represent different aspects of the area’s history.
Gorge and Via Ferrata
Kőmosó Gorge is a relatively small but impressive gorge valley at the foot of Csesznek Castle. Large rock steps, small waterfalls and a rock basin where a small pond forms shape the landscape. Conditions may change after rain; take this into account when planning your visit.
In 2013, Via Ferrata Csesznek was built in the same gorge as Hungary’s first via ferrata route. There are five routes on the Dachstein limestone rock faces, with difficulty grades ranging from B to F. This range makes the grade an important factor when choosing a route. Equipment rental, instruction and guided programmes are available. As route conditions and service details may change, check them before planning your trip.
On foot to viewpoints
From the summit of Tarack Hill, the panorama takes in Csesznek, Csesznek Castle and the surrounding area. The summit can be reached on foot from the southeastern part of the car park on the edge of the village. The trail therefore starts at a clearly identified point, and the destination offers views over the village and castle.
Another route option leads from Csesznek to Zörög-tető. Follow the green-marked trail, which passes through a tunnel beneath Route 82 at the end of Vasút utca. These details help with navigation in different ways: access to Tarack Hill is described from the car park, while the route to Zörög-tető is described by its trail markings and passage beneath Route 82.
More things to do in Csesznek
At its covered indoor locations, Lovagvölgy offers workshops and activities in the Apród houses, the village houses and the “füvesház”. There is also a VR experience, an escape room and a folk games house. Individual programmes may change. These options provide a different focus alongside the castle, gorge and trails.
