A life-size seated sculpture by Barna Gácsi commemorates Ferenc Mádl, the former President of Hungary, who was born here, in Bánd. Together with St. Anne’s Church, it brings personal remembrance and local history into focus.

Memorial Sculpture and Church History in Bánd

The Ferenc Mádl memorial sculpture stands in front of the former school, now used as a kindergarten, at the foot of an old linden tree. Beside it is a landscaped seating area with metal seats. The site brings together a monument to a president born in Bánd and a building whose former use as a school differs from its current use as a kindergarten.

St. Anne’s Church also offers a distinct way to explore the history of the town. According to the research findings of Dénes Nemes, Klára Tallián had the church built in Bánd in 1795 with the support of the faithful. The specific date and named patron give the church’s history a different focus from the memorial sculpture: here, the subject is the construction of a church building, while there, it is the memory of a person and his birthplace.

For visits to the sights, the municipality recommends the designated parking lot beside the cemetery. Within the residential and quiet zone, parking is permitted only in designated spaces. Check the signs on arrival so you can comply with the local parking regulations.

More topics in the broader North Balaton destination

In the broader North Balaton destination, Tapolca Lake Cave offers boat rides and the guided “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”) exhibition. The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has so far been explored over a length of 14.6 kilometers. Here, underground landscapes and an exhibition sit alongside Bánd’s biographical and church-history themes.

Another geological highlight in the broader North Balaton destination is Hegyestű, a 337-meter-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. There, the inner face of a basalt volcano that was active about 8 million years ago reveals a distinctive rock formation. At the viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry grounds, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panorama board. A rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia adds to this insight. The panorama board helps visitors orient themselves in the landscape, while the rock garden draws attention to the rocks of the western half of Hungary.

Porcelain also provides a distinct thematic contrast in the broader North Balaton destination. The Herend Porcelain Museum presents a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions about the history of the manufactory. The visitor center also explains porcelain production, techniques, and the traditions of applied art. In workshops at the mini-manufactory, visitors can handle porcelain paste and a brush for painting. The offerings thus differ in their perspective: the museum and visitor center present history and production, while the workshops offer a hands-on opportunity to work with the material.
