Taliándörögd offers several distinct starting points for an exploratory stay: church architecture, early local history, Tik-hegy and a cycle tour that passes through the village. This makes it possible to plan around specific buildings and landscape features rather than just a general idea of Lake Balaton.

Church architecture and local history

The Szűz Mária Neve templom stands on a hill above Taliándörögd’s main road. The east-facing building has a west tower, a sacristy at the northeast corner and a southern entrance porch. The elongated chancel is narrower than the nave and has a straight end. On the north side of the nave is the Szent-András Chapel: it is oriented north to south and has a polygonal end. Thus, the orientation and the form of the ends differ between the main church building and the chapel.

A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary is documented in 1339 in Alsódörögd, present-day Taliándörögd; a stone church is mentioned there in 1347. These two dates provide distinct early reference points for the village’s religious history. The Roman Catholic parish house at 30 Kossuth utca is another architectural point of interest: it is L-shaped and late Baroque. The description of the church focuses on the chancel and chapel, while that of the parish house highlights its shape and architectural style.

Landscape and cycle tour

The 323-metre-high Tik-hegy lies in the western part of the Dörögdi Basin and provides shade for Taliándörögd. It shifts the focus from individual buildings to the landscape around the village. The mountain’s elevation and location offer a clear point of reference in the basin.

A 29-kilometre cycle tour starts in Kapolcs, passes through Taliándörögd, Öcs, Pula, Nagyvázsony and Vigántpetend, then returns to Kapolcs. Taliándörögd is therefore one section of a circular route whose total length covers the journey from Kapolcs and back. Check current route conditions before setting off.

Cultural programme in Taliándörögd

For the 2026 edition of Művészetek Völgye, held from 24 July to 2 August, collaborative creative activities, an exhibition by textile artist Richter Sára and performances were announced at the LéleKzet Református Udvar in Taliándörögd. The programme included, among others, Gryllus testvérek, Zsongom, Rajkai Zoltán, Balla Gergely, Vecsei H. Miklós and the Cimbali Band with Herczku Ágnes. These specific dates clearly distinguish the festival programme in time from the buildings and landscape features described here.

More to explore in the wider Lake Balaton - North destination

The wider Lake Balaton - North destination offers other points of interest. Boat trips are available at Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, which also features the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt.” The cave is part of an underground cave system beneath the town, of which 14.6 kilometres have been explored to date. This combines a specific visitor experience with a geological subject.

Hegyestű adds another geological highlight to the wider Lake Balaton - North destination: the 337-metre-high mountain lies between Zánka and Monoszló. Its inner face reveals a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago. At the viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panorama board; a rock garden displays characteristic rock types from Transdanubia.

The wider Lake Balaton - North destination offers more to discover in arts, crafts and exhibitions. The Herend Porcelain Museum presents a permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor centre introduces porcelain production, its techniques and the traditions of applied arts. In workshops, visitors can handle porcelain clay and a brush for painting. The Levendula Ház in Tihany adds an interactive exhibition on the formation of the Tihany Peninsula and lavender cultivation, as well as a craft workshop and an experience garden.
