Káptalanfa combines local memorial sites with a circular route designated for four modes of travel. The Millennium Memorial stands in the public park; the circular route begins at the Művelődési Ház. When planning, you can consider two different focuses: local history and a route that extends beyond the edge of the village. The route is designated for hiking, cycling, horse riding and carriage driving. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Memorial Sites and Community

The Millennium Memorial stands in the centre of Káptalanfa’s public park. The Székely Gate is another local memorial. It was erected at the initiative of the Szent János Polgári Kör and with the support of the local government. It took a year and a half to complete, and the gate was inaugurated in 2021. Its history brings together a citizens’ initiative and support from the local government.

The Művelődési Ház is Káptalanfa’s community centre. It serves as a venue for events, exhibitions devoted to preserving traditions, and meetings of civic organisations. The circular route also starts there. The building therefore represents both community cultural life and the starting point of a designated route.

Circular Route and Nature Conservation

At the edge of the village, the circular route passes the playground and sports field. It then crosses the Szent János Bridge and leaves Káptalanfa. Beyond the bridge and outside the village, there is a view of the Sárosfői Halastavak Nature Reserve. The sequence of waypoints and the landscape view give the route a clear spatial orientation.

The nature reserve regulations designate 76.2 hectares of the Sárosfői Halastavak Nature Reserve, including areas in Káptalanfa and Devecser, as specially protected. This figure refers to the designated area and includes land in both villages.

More Highlights in the Wider North Balaton Destination

The wider North Balaton destination offers further opportunities to explore landscapes and culture. Boat trips are available in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang in Tapolca, which also has the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town, of which 14.6 kilometres have been explored to date. Boat trips and the exhibition offer different ways to discover this geological topic.

Hegyestű offers a different landscape. The 337-metre-high mountain lies between Zánka and Monoszló, where the inside of a basalt volcano that was active about 8 million years ago can be seen. From the viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panorama board. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia. While the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang turns attention beneath the town, here the focus is on the rocks and the surrounding landscape.

Sümeg Castle is also part of the wider North Balaton destination. It is a relatively well-preserved medieval fortress on a bare hill that rises above its surroundings.
