In Alsóörs, several different discoveries lie close together: a nationally unique late Gothic manor house, a Reformed church with medieval traces, an amphitheater at the site of a former quarry, and the Somlyó-hegyi kilátó lookout. There is also a hiking trail along the edge of the village, as well as opportunities for sailing and water sports. When planning your visit, you can consider cultural sites, views and activities as distinct points of interest.
Late Gothic Heritage and Church Art
The Török House in Alsóörs is a nationally unique late Gothic manor house of the lesser nobility. Its architectural features indicate that it was built around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. It stands on a steep slope and offers views of the eastern basin of Lake Balaton. Its architectural history and location give the house two distinct points of interest: its period of construction is inferred from the building’s features, while its surroundings draw the eye across the landscape.
The Reformed church of Alsóörs also brings together building history and interior features. It preserves the walls of a Church of St. Mary, first mentioned in 1318. On the south wall, alongside Romanesque slit windows, there is a large figurative mural. The church also has a painted, floral-decorated wooden ceiling beneath the galleries. The traces therefore range from the early mention of the Church of St. Mary to specific details on the walls and ceiling.
Amphitheater and Activities
AMFI Alsóörs was created at the site of a former quarry. Its semicircular amphitheater, built of red stone, has 450 seats and is used for concerts and film screenings. AMFI also offers an interactive forest treasure hunt for teams of two to eight people. This brings together two distinctly different ways to spend time there: events in the amphitheater and a shared team puzzle activity.
For outdoor exercise, the National Blue Trail runs along the edge of Alsóörs. Another vantage point is the Somlyó-hegyi kilátó, which can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car. From its top level, the view extends across the eastern basin of Lake Balaton, the northern shore and the Bakony. If you are choosing between a hike and a viewpoint, the main difference between the options described is their relationship to the area: the trail follows the village boundary, while the view from the kilátó opens out across the landscapes mentioned.
Sailing and water sports are another focus. At the Alsóörsi Marina Vitorlás Klub, you can take part in sailing competitions and try various water sports. The club also organizes sailing camps for children and adults; availability may vary by season. If you are particularly interested in a camp, check its seasonal availability in advance.
Finding Your Way Around the Beach District
Alsóörs railway station is on the main road and in the center of the beach district. In front of Községi Beach, there is free parking for approximately 500 cars and 100 bicycles. These capacities are approximate and refer to the area in front of the beach. These orientation points relate to different aspects of your stay: the station’s location helps you place the beach district within the village, while the parking spaces provide specific information for arriving at Községi Beach.
Alsóörs offers a range of interests to choose from, without requiring them to be combined into a single itinerary: architecture and church art, events and team activities, views and hiking, as well as sailing and water sports. You can decide which ones to prioritize according to your own interests.
