Apátistvánfalva combines a distinctive dispersed settlement with forest and meadow landscapes, as well as a border history of its own. The individual houses are mostly set apart on hilltops or slopes, surrounded by fields, mown orchards and meadows. This dispersed settlement pattern is also explicitly featured on a hiking route.

Meadows and forest in Őrség National Park

Apátistvánfalva is part of Őrség National Park. The area’s natural features include preserved meadows with rare plants and lime-avoiding Scots pine forests. The meadows are home to, among other plants, a subspecies of zergeboglár, pink sömöröskosbor, purple broad-leaved ujjaskosbor and struccpáfrány, which is rare nationwide. Juniper, hairy birch, clubmosses, various wintergreen species, and black and red bilberries grow in the lime-avoiding Scots pine forests. Plant visibility varies by season. Meadow flora and forest vegetation thus offer nature lovers different perspectives on the landscape; different plants may come into view depending on the time of year.

Comparing the nature trail and hiking route

The Gyantászok útja nature trail is 4 km long and is not a circular route. It starts and ends at the Ökoturisztikai Információs Centrum in Apátistvánfalva. Nine stops explain the flora and fauna of the Vendvidék forests, selection forestry, resin tapping and the importance of forests. The trail thus links nature topics with forest use. Another route, described as the fourth hiking route, leads from Apátistvánfalva via Zsidahegy, Zsida, Lake Hársas and Farkasfa, returning to Apátistvánfalva. It draws attention to the dispersed settlement pattern. The two routes therefore have different focuses: the Gyantászok útja features forest themes at nine stops, while the fourth route highlights the settlement pattern and names the places along its route.

Border history and cultural heritage

The Határőr Emlékhely is dedicated to the everyday life of the border guards. The exhibition includes a realistically furnished sleeping room, a weapons room and the stable of the mounted border guard unit. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; confirm the appointment again before traveling. This means that planning a visit here is subject to a specific requirement.

The church and the tradition associated with it also contribute to the area’s cultural identity. The large, listed church was built in 1785 in honor of Harding Szent István. Harding Szent István is commemorated each year on July 16 as part of the church’s patronal festival; this tradition dates back to 1683. Another expression of cultural heritage is the distinctive Slovene dialect, which is still preserved and used in everyday life and at cultural heritage events. The area’s history is thus reflected in its architecture and annual celebration, as well as in a living linguistic tradition.

Choose accommodation based on your reason for traveling

Factor the pre-arranged visit to the Határőr Emlékhely into your plans, and decide whether to make the four-kilometer nature trail or the hiking route through several places a key part of your trip.
