Alsószölnök brings together nature and culture, with a clear connection to two bodies of water: the Szölnöki-patak and the Rába. Rare plants, the occasional sighting of an otter and a stone statue of the Virgin Mary add to the local character. Water tours are also closely connected to the Rába. When looking for a holiday apartment, start by deciding whether you want Alsószölnök itself to be the focus or would prefer to consider Vas County as a broader travel destination with additional themes.

Water and Nature in Alsószölnök

The Szölnöki-patak rises in Trdkovo, Slovenia, flows through Felsőszölnök and Alsószölnök, and joins the Rába near Alsószölnök. Its source in Slovenia, course through both settlements and confluence with the Rába in Alsószölnök give the stream a clear geographical route. It can therefore be seen not just as a single point on a map, but as a watercourse with a named source and course.

Many rare plants grow in Alsószölnök, including mosses, clubmosses and ferns. These groups shift attention from the visible river to another dimension of local nature. Those interested in nature can consider the watercourses and plant diversity as different ways of experiencing the area.

Wildlife and activities along the Rába are also distinct aspects of the area. The rare, protected otter is occasionally spotted in the river. The stretch of the Rába near Alsószölnök also serves as a starting point for numerous water tours. These offer two different points of interest for trip planning: a possible, occasional wildlife sighting and a stretch of river used as a base for water tours.

A Statue of the Virgin Mary with a History of Its Own

The statue of the Virgin Mary, carved from stone, comes from a chapel built in 1764. In 1889, it was moved to its current location in Alsószölnök. The two dates relate to different parts of its history: 1764 to the chapel and 1889 to the statue’s relocation. This sequence makes the cultural landmark particularly easy to understand, as its origin and present location belong to different points in time. Together with the natural attractions, it gives the area a distinctive character, bringing the river, plant life and cultural history together.

Vas County as a Broader Travel Destination

The broader destination of Vas County offers additional themes. The Termál Kerékpáros Túraút cycling route in Vas County leads to five spa complexes and combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions, as well as other spas. The Vulkán Tour takes a different route, leading to Kis-Somlyó, Ság-hegy and Belső-hegy. The two routes therefore offer different thematic emphases: one combines cycling and spas, while the other focuses on three named volcanic hills.

Thermal baths are another distinct attraction in Vas County: Bük and Sárvár are home to two internationally recognised thermal baths, located 25 kilometres apart. Bükfürdő is two kilometres from the town of Bük and is an independent medical and tourist centre, as well as one of Hungary’s spa resorts. These places and activities complement the local focus on rivers and nature with a distinctly different offering.

The broader destination also offers a range of cultural and historical attractions. Since opening in 1973, the Vasi Skanzen has saved and rebuilt a total of 43 buildings from 27 settlements. It presents the rural way of life and folk architecture of Vas County over the past two centuries. The Nádasdy Ferenc Museum houses an exhibition on the history of the hussars, described as unique in Hungary; it also displays art and cultural history objects from the castles and manor houses of Vas County.
