Several distinct cultural themes come together in Sótony: the Trinity Church with a statue in front of the building, a central war memorial and historic vineyard events. This provides a clear framework for planning a trip: religious and civic remembrance on the one hand, and traditions associated with cellars and vineyards on the other. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether this local cultural history should be the main focus or whether the broader themes of the Eisenburg destination are also important.

Church and memorial sites in Sótony

The Roman Catholic Trinity Church in Sótony was consecrated in 1874. In front of it, a statue of the Trinity dating from 1906 stands on a Doric column. The two dates are 32 years apart. The church and the statue are therefore two distinct testimonies to the town’s religious history: the consecrated church building and the monument on the column in front of it. The chronological sequence helps distinguish the two features rather than combining them into a single history of origin.

The monument to the First and Second World Wars stands in Sótony’s central square. Erected in 1991, it replaced the previous monument, which had been inaugurated in 1926. The inauguration of the earlier monument and the erection of the new one were 65 years apart. Local remembrance of both wars can thus also be viewed as a succession of two monuments that shaped the same public memorial site at different times.

Vineyard traditions and historic events

In 2024, the Gyepűjárás in Sótony was described as an annual tradition: each year, 25 to 40 cellars are opened, and a Holy Mass is usually part of the event. This is a range, not a fixed number for every year. The combination of cellar openings and Mass gives an impression of the tradition’s different elements. If you would like to plan your trip around the Gyepűjárás, it is worth checking the date for the event year you have in mind.

At the 2007 Gyepűtiprás, women and cimbalom players sang at the opening by the decorated wooden gate on Kómár Hill; a carved memorial post was also unveiled. Participants visited cellars in Sótony’s seven vineyards. From there, the view extended as far as the Kőszegi Mountains. Along with the ceremonial details, this landscape vista is also part of the description of the 2007 event.

The wider setting: Eisenburg

The broader Eisenburg destination offers additional themes. The Írottkő Nature Park lies in the northwestern part of Vas County and includes the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. The Vasi Open-Air Museum presents the rural way of life and folk architecture of Vas County over the past two centuries. Since opening in 1973, it has saved and rebuilt 43 buildings from 27 settlements. The Nádasdy Ferenc Museum displays art and cultural history objects from the castles and manor houses of Vas County, as well as an exhibition on the history of the Hussars described as unique in Hungary.

Cycling and themed routes also offer their own highlights: the Termál Kerékpáros Túraút (Thermal Cycling Route) leads to five spa complexes in Vas County and combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions and other spas. The Vulkán Tour leads to Kis-Somlyó, Ság Hill and Belső Hill. These regional themes complement Sótony’s local history of churches, memorials and events with distinct landscape, cultural and route perspectives.
