Répcelak brings together local history and Lake Répcelak: its collections explore the town’s past and industrial beginnings, while fishing is also possible at the lake. Different visiting arrangements are important when planning a visit. Prior registration is required for the Local History Collection; the Szent-István Collection can be visited by prior arrangement.
Collections: Local History, Finds and Art
The Local History Collection opened in 2007. One exhibition explores Répcelak’s past; two others show the origins of the small town’s industrial enterprises. The collection also documents the beginnings of cheese production in Répcelak. Together, these themes lead from local history and industry to a specific branch of local production. Prior registration is required for a visit; arrange your visit in advance.
The Szent-István Collection is housed in the building of Répcelak’s Catholic church. It displays prehistoric finds from Répcelak that are 7,000 years old, as well as medieval artefacts. The collection can be visited by prior arrangement; confirm your arrangements before travelling. As a visit requires an appointment, it is advisable to plan ahead.
Art exhibitions are held monthly at the Répce Gallery. Check the current programme before visiting. This allows you to plan a visit to the gallery without counting on a particular exhibition.
Church Art and the Radó Memorial House
An outdoor statue of Martin Luther stands beside the Protestant church in Répcelak. It is described as the only outdoor statue of Luther in Hungary. Its location beside the church highlights the connection between the monument and its Protestant church setting.
The Radó Memorial House was fully renovated in 2020. It includes a French garden and an English garden. These two garden styles are a distinctive feature of the grounds, in addition to the building itself. As their condition may change, check on site before visiting.
Lake Répcelak and Getting There
Lake Répcelak lies between the town of Répcelak and the M86. The lake is surrounded by established groups of trees, bushes and shrubs; the vegetation may change with the seasons. Alongside the cultural and historical attractions, this offers a distinct landscape feature whose appearance can vary depending on the time of year.
Fishing is permitted at Lake Répcelak from sunrise to sunset. Check the current regulations before fishing. The lake is home to, among other species, whitefish, Prussian carp, catfish and pike; the species composition may change with fisheries management. Répcelak also has an InterCity stop. Check current train services separately if you wish to travel by rail.
In the wider Eisenburg destination
The wider Eisenburg destination also features themed routes in Vas County. The Termál Kerékpáros Túraút leads to five spa complexes and combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions, as well as other spas. The Vulkán Tour leads to Kis-Somlyó, Ság-hegy and Belső-hegy. The Vasi Skanzen provides a cultural and historical focus: it presents the rural way of life and folk architecture of Vas County over the past two centuries. These themes provide a broader regional context alongside Répcelak’s local collections and lake.
