Németkér can be explored through two interconnected themes: the village’s Swabian heritage and the landscape around it. Road 6231, on which Németkér is located, connects Paks and Cece. History, customs, local food and nature offer different ways to focus your trip. You might consider whether you are particularly interested in cultural history or excursions into the surrounding forests.

Swabian History and Local Cuisine

German-speaking settlers, mainly from Hesse, began arriving in Németkér in 1785. The village still preserves its Swabian traditions today. This is also reflected in its culinary heritage: Kéri stangli is a local Swabian dish, and Kerva Knedl is a yeast dumpling from the local Swabian food culture.

The cellar village of Neuriss also connects local history with this tradition. Its surviving remains are considered a legacy of Swabian culture. The history of viticulture and wine culture in Németkér is also associated with Neuriss. Together with the traditional foods, this offers a way to explore the village’s cultural identity without focusing on a single attraction.

Places of Remembrance and Customs

The Staub Ferenc Memorial House was established in 2006 in the former home of Staub Ferenc, a painter from Németkér. It features a permanent exhibition of the painter’s works. A Swabian room has been furnished in the section facing the street; in the courtyard, objects from a local history collection are kept in an open storage area. The same house thus brings together memories of the painter and insights into local history.

The Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross dates from 1816. Wooden Stations of the Cross stand on Kálvária Hill. Another part of cultural life is the Németkéri napok, a long-running series of events whose program may vary from year to year. The Búcsúfa tree-raising in September also follows an old Swabian tradition; it is seasonal and may likewise vary from year to year. If you would like to include these events in your trip plans, check the dates in advance.

Látóhegy and the Forests Around Németkér

Látóhegy has been protected since 1987 and is part of the Dél-Mezőföld Landscape Protection Area. The area provides refuge for rare and valuable plant and animal species. Protected habitats include sandy areas and wet meadows. Plants found there include marsh orchids, sand iris, sand feather grass and homoki varjúháj. The focus at Látóhegy is therefore on protecting special habitats.

There are several thousand hectares of forest around Németkér. Acacia and coniferous forests predominate, and remnants of old oak forests have also been preserved. The forests offer opportunities for excursions. Those who want to combine nature and culture will find different themes for their trip planning: protected habitats at Látóhegy and forest areas in the surroundings.
