Dunaföldvár combines cultural and historical discoveries with views of the Danube and nature-related attractions. Its churches span different periods of construction, while the gallery and Tájház focus on wood art and regional everyday life. Other highlights include a viewing area in a tower, fishing and water sports, and a lake of ornithological importance.

Churches and the Historic Town Center

The Franciscan church and monastery, dedicated to Saint Anne and locally known as Barátok temploma, were built between 1703 and 1706 and renovated in the Baroque style in 1786. The church dedicated to Saint Helena, locally known as Öregtemplom, was built in the 1720s. The histories of the two buildings can therefore be compared chronologically: the Franciscan church was first built and later renovated in the Baroque style. The protected historic town center is another point of interest in its own right. Renovation of the Vár-negyed and the streets leading to it has enhanced the area, complementing the churches with another aspect of local cultural heritage.

Wood Art and Everyday Culture

The Fafaragó Galéria in the castle courtyard opened in 1996 to showcase contemporary Hungarian woodcarving, wood art and folk sculpture. The Dunaföldvári Tájház offers a different cultural perspective: its exhibition features objects from everyday life and traditional costumes. The house also illustrates a traditional home from the Mezőföld region. Its mud walls, reed-thatched gable roof and rammed-earth floor make the building methods easy to see in its walls, roof and floor. The cultural focus thus ranges from contemporary wood art to regional home and everyday culture. A separate room at the Tájház is available for children and small groups to take part in craft and ethnographic activities; check the current program in advance.

Views of the Danube and the Town

The green space around Szent-Ilona Church offers a view of the Danube and the bridge rising above it. Vegetation and access may vary. The Csonka(Török)-torony offers a different perspective: a spiral staircase leads to its viewing area, which affords a panoramic view. The difference lies in the type of viewpoint: one is from the green space, the other from the viewing area in the tower. Check current access arrangements for the tower before visiting.

Water, Fishing Areas and Birdlife

The waters of the Danube near Dunaföldvár are suitable for fishing and water sports; check specific providers and conditions before your trip. The Solti Duna-ág is in Bács-Kiskun County, but belongs to Dunaföldvár and is a fishing area with carp, catfish and grass carp. Felső-tó lies on the northwestern boundary of Dunaföldvár, is ornithologically significant and has been protected since 1975. Fishing and water sports thus offer a contrast to a nature experience focused on birdlife. Check local access restrictions at the lake before planning a visit.

Choose a Focus for Your Stay

For a culture-focused stay, the histories of the buildings, wood art and regional everyday culture offer different points of interest. Those more interested in the landscape can weigh up the viewpoints, fishing waters and ornithological importance of Felső-tó.
