Churches, chapels and local history stand alongside recurring festivals and opportunities for hiking and cycling in the area of Závod. Particularly distinctive are the Kálvária Chapel and the relic of Saint Benedict. When planning, take into account both the dates of individual festivals and visits that need to be arranged in advance.

Religious Buildings and Religious History

The Church of Saint John was built in the Baroque style between 1764 and 1768. Its furnishings date from the second half of the 18th century. The organ dates back to 1779 and was modified by Unger Endre at the end of the 19th century; Janicsek József is named as its builder. A stone cross and statues of the Immaculata and Saint Vendel stand in the church garden. The building history, organ and garden furnishings each offer a distinct perspective on the local religious history.

The body of the martyr Saint Benedict has been kept in the church in Závod since 28 June 1777. The relic of Saint Benedict can be viewed during Mass or by prior arrangement. If you plan to visit outside Mass, arrange it in advance.

The Kálvária Chapel, with its 14 stations, stands above the village. Despite later changes to its façade, its floor plan and the layout of its interior and exterior preserve the tradition of the chapels of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. This combination of floor plan and spatial design makes the chapel unique in the region.

Local History at the Local Heritage Museum

The local heritage museum in Závod can be visited by prior arrangement. It displays traditional costumes, furnishings and equipment belonging to the local Swabians. One room is devoted to the material heritage of Transylvanian Székely families who came to Závod from Bukovina in 1945. Thus, everyday objects of the local Swabians are presented alongside the evidence of a family history connected with their arrival from Bukovina. Arrange your museum visit in advance.

Archaeological finds also add to the picture of local history: further Avar and Roman finds were discovered during excavations in Závod. These can be viewed at the county museum.

Festivals and Culinary Traditions

The Faludisznó vágás festival takes place on the second Saturday in February and features dishes prepared according to Transylvanian and Swabian traditions. The Forgó Festival falls on the second Saturday in September and includes a cauldron-cooking competition. The two dates therefore fall at different times of the year; check the current event date before planning your trip around it.

The Fényköszöntő festival and the Závodi Bortúra have also been organized for years through civic initiatives. For these events, too, check the relevant dates in advance when planning your trip. This makes it possible to include the festivals, with their different occasions and programmes, in your stay without assuming the dates are fixed.

Hiking, Cycling and Places to Visit

The area around Závod offers opportunities for hiking and cycling. It is considered scenic and includes forests and expansive views. Another nearby destination is the Papdi Chapel: it stands on a forest clearing at the site of the former village of Papd, remains accessible and is a popular destination for excursions.

At the 2024 event, the MTB Route III. Tolnai Zöldút passed by the half-timbered house in Závod. After registering, participants could access a downloadable GPX track and a PDF map. This information refers to the route used for that event. If you are planning a cycling trip today, check the route and the availability of the materials in advance.

Your travel plans can therefore focus on different things: church and local history, a visit to the Papdi Chapel or a stay around one of the festivals. For events, the dates help with planning; advance arrangements are important for visits to the relic and the local heritage museum.
