Somogygeszti can be explored through three specific points of reference: the Deseda stream, which flows through the village; the history of the manor house; and the DĂ©l-DunĂĄntĂșli-Piros hiking trail. The castle park adds botanical value and local protected status to these themes. For planning your trip, the nearest railway station and the access road also provide guidance—two separate details about getting there.

Manor House and Castle Park

Botka JĂĄnos had the manor house built in the early 1820s; Count Jankovich-BĂ©sĂĄn JĂłzsef had it remodelled in 1926–1927. The tower of the KeresztelƑ-Szent-JĂĄnos Church was added in 1852. These dates can therefore be linked to their respective building works: construction and remodelling at the manor house, and a tower addition at the church.

The Jankovich-Bésån Castle Park has notable botanical value. Its tree population includes large plane trees and lime trees, as well as groups of spruces and Scots pines. The castle garden is a locally protected natural area and is privately owned. If you are planning a visit, check the visiting arrangements before you travel.

Hiking Trail and Stamp Point

The route description published in January 2024 identifies the DĂ©l-DunĂĄntĂșli-Piros hiking trail as marked as far as the stamp point in Somogygeszti. The stamp point is at the Nemzeti DohĂĄnybolt at 25 SzabadsĂĄg utca. If the shop’s operations change, follow the local signage; trail conditions may also change.

A section of the DĂ©l-DunĂĄntĂșli-Piros hiking trail between Somogygeszti and MernyeszentmiklĂłs was rerouted after part of the former route was ploughed over. The new markings are shown on the ground and on online maps. This change makes the section a separate planning consideration: in addition to the stamp point, you should also take the route between the two villages into account.

Getting to Somogygeszti

The nearest railway station is in Mernye, five kilometres away. If travelling by road, you can reach Somogygeszti from Main Road 67 via a five-kilometre access road that begins at the junction near Mernye. The same distance therefore refers to two different things: the station’s distance from the village and the length of the access road. This lets you plan your rail and road directions separately.

The Wider Area: Balaton South

When exploring the wider Balaton South destination, it is also worth looking at Somogy County. Places of interest include Kis-Balaton, the Zselici TĂĄjvĂ©delmi Körzet, Barcsi ƐsborĂłkĂĄs and BabĂłcsai Basakert. The Zselici TĂĄjvĂ©delmi Körzet received the International Dark Sky Park title in 2009 because of its low light pollution; Zselici Csillagpark was established in the heart of the protected area. BalĂĄta lies between KaszĂł and Szenta and is counted among Somogy’s especially valued natural assets.

Finding Accommodation with a Local Focus

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Somogygeszti, you can first decide what to focus on: architectural history, the park and nature, or hiking. If you plan to visit the castle park, check the visiting arrangements in advance; the railway station and access road are separate points of reference for your journey.
