Nagylóc combines a church shaped by the Middle Ages with a landscape where forests, rocks, and geological features each take center stage. The forested Őrhegy and the Zsunyi quarry give the area a strong connection to nature, while the church adds a complex architectural history.

Church and Architectural History

The Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Nagylóc was built in the Gothic style in the 15th century. Despite substantial alterations in the 19th century, it has preserved its original buttresses and medieval door and window openings. Its architectural history thus brings together Gothic origins and later changes.

The two Neo-Gothic side aisles and the fourth story of the tower were built in 1888. The different periods can therefore be distinguished: surviving medieval elements stand alongside clearly dated Neo-Gothic additions. Those interested in architecture will find specific features here that illustrate these different phases.

Forest, Rocks, and Geology

Őrhegy rises above Nagylóc, is covered in native forests, and is a popular hiking destination. On a forest path near Kőrakás, the rock called Jézus nyoma is still visible on the hill’s southeastern spur. The forested hill and the named rock are distinct points of interest: one for hiking, the other as a specific natural formation.

The Zsunyi quarry is located in Zsunypuszta, which belongs to Nagylóc, on the slope of Zsunyi-hegy. It exposes Miocene amphibole andesite with spherical formations and an iron-oxide-striped appearance. The overlying rock consists of fossil-rich Oligocene–Miocene Széchényi Schlier. The quarry thus brings distinctive rock formations together with a fossil-bearing layer.

The fossils mentioned there include snails, mussels, and plant impressions; fossils can be collected in the quarry. However, access to the quarry is permitted only with authorization. Bear this condition in mind when including the site in your travel plans.

Valley and Bird Site near Zsunypuszta

Zsunypuszta lies in a valley along the main road; the valley is bordered by the Zsunyi stream and the eastern Cserhát. A large pasture near Zsunypuszta is an important bird site. Together with forested Őrhegy and the geological formations on Zsunyi-hegy, this illustrates the variety of landscapes: forest, valley, open pastureland, and rock.

More Perspectives in the Broader Destination of Neuburg

The broader destination of Neuburg offers further cultural and geological themes. The old village of Hollókő is a Palóc settlement in Nógrád County in northern Hungary and a deliberately preserved, living example of rural life before the 20th-century Agrarian Revolution. The Boszorkány-kő geological trail illustrates basaltic volcanism from 2.4 to 5.2 million years ago. Its geological features include sediment inclusions, curved lava slabs, and basalt columns formed by weathering.
