Visitors choosing Hollókő as a destination can focus on two themes: the living Palóc settlement and the landscape of the Hollókői Tájvédelmi Körzet. Hollókő Ófalu is an outstanding example of a traditional settlement that has been deliberately preserved. At the same time, Hollókő remains an inhabited place, not an open-air museum village. This combination of local history and nature shapes the range of experiences on offer.

Palóc heritage in the inhabited Ófalu

Traditional Palóc building styles and the historic, single-street settlement layout have been preserved in Ófalu. The one-street layout is therefore as much a part of the village’s character as its architecture. Those interested in the daily lives of past generations can find a particular perspective at the village museum: since 1964, it has presented the way of life and home of a representative Palóc farming family. Exhibits include furniture, traditional clothing and agricultural tools. Check the museum’s current visiting arrangements before your trip.

The Post Museum offers a different focus on cultural history. Its permanent exhibition, “A palócföld postája,” is spread across two rooms and traces the development of the Palóc postal network, along with related postal memorabilia. This complements insights into domestic and economic life with the history of communication in the region.

Castle, exhibitions and crafts

The medieval castle ruins stand on a hill above the village and are part of the World Heritage site. An interactive exhibition at the castle illustrates its history and legends. Visitors can see a knights’ hall, historic living quarters and a chapel. For questions about guided tours, you can speak to the castle staff; the Hollókői-vár app serves as a digital guide.

You can also get hands-on experience with traditional craft techniques: at some of the craft workshops in Ófalu, you can try pottery or weaving. The activities may vary from one workshop to another. Alongside its exhibitions and architecture, Hollókő therefore also offers the chance to explore craft activities.

Nature trails and historic land use

The nature trails have different focuses. The 4.5 km Hollókői biológiai tanösvény (Hollókő Biological Nature Trail) loops around Vár-hegy and the hagyásfás pasture of Túlsó-mező. Along the way, it introduces habitats characteristic of the Cserhát. The Kertek-alja tanösvény (Kertek-alja Nature Trail), by contrast, runs through the valley of the Hollókői-patak, along the ends of gardens that descend into the valley. One trail thus passes named habitats and landscape features, while the other runs through a valley with a stream and gardens.

The Hollókői Tájvédelmi Körzet lies entirely within Hollókő’s administrative area; the whole area is freely accessible. The landscape’s former uses are also part of local history. Hemp fields once lay beside the stream at the western end of Hollókő Ófalu. The village families grew the amount of hemp they needed on narrow plots. This historical detail adds the question of how the landscape was once farmed to the story of the area.

Choose a focus for your hotel search

When looking for a hotel in Hollókő, your own interests can be a good starting point: would you like your stay to focus more on the history of the Palóc settlement and its museums, the castle and crafts, or the trails through the landscape? The different themes offer more than one way to experience the place and help you shape your trip around your cultural or nature interests.
