Dunaszentmiklós lies at the edge of the Gerecse Mountains, in a valley sloping down towards the Danube region. The landscape gives your stay a clear setting, complemented by an observation tower, a circular route and striking details of the local church architecture. The Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet also includes Dunaszentmiklós. When planning your visit, you can easily choose what to focus on: views and trails, or the historical traces in the village?
Views and Protected Landscape
The Dunaszentmiklós Kilátó is a 10-metre-high wooden tower on the slope of Tündér-hegy. From there, you can look out over the Danube and the Tata Basin; on a clear day, the view reaches as far as the mountain ranges of the Pilis and Vértes. You can reach the observation tower on foot via well-marked hiking trails with gentle ascents. Benches and tables are located nearby.
On the outskirts of Dunaszentmiklós are 427-metre-high Nagy-Somlyó and its cave; both are within the strictly protected area of the Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet. Access to the strictly protected area of Nagy-Somlyó is permitted only with a permit and a guide. Check current visitor access in advance.
Local History in Architectural Forms
The present-day layout of Dunaszentmiklós reflects the building traditions of the Roman Catholic Germans whom József Esterházy settled there in 1733. The Szent-Miklós Bishop’s Church was built in 1911 in the Neo-Gothic style. Its tower is 33 metres high, including the cross. The outer walls feature 14 colourful, glazed ceramic reliefs that form the Örömút. The Dunaszentmiklósi Tájház is also located in the village.
Circular Route and Getting There
The Dunaszentmiklós–Kőpite route is a moderately difficult circular route for walking or cycling. It is 8.8 kilometres long, with 176 metres of ascent and 176 metres of descent. The hiking route starts in the village centre, after a visit to the Dunaszentmiklósi Tájház. The circular route offers a different focus from the path to the observation tower: choose between a marked approach to a viewpoint and a complete loop with a set distance and elevation figures.
The wine-growing area runs along the outskirts of Dunaszentmiklós, but lies mostly within the territory of Neszmély and is of importance to the wine industry. From Route 10, you can reach Dunaszentmiklós after Süttő by taking a left turn; from Tata, the approach is via Szomód. Conditions on the access roads may change, so check your route before setting off.
