Baj can be explored through two very different aspects: the vineyards on the slopes of the Gerecse and the trails around Kálvaria. There is also a Rococo church with several works of art, as well as traditions surrounding wine. You can use these themes to plan your visit and decide whether hiking, church art or wine culture should be the focus of your stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Baj, you can tailor your search to the reason for your trip.

Vineyards, forests and views

The Baji Vineyard lies on the slopes of the Gerecse Mountains in the area of Baj. Its south-facing plots have loess soils and good drainage—conditions suitable for winegrowing. Traditional wine presses and cellars line the plots. They are considered living testimony to the local wine culture and give the vineyard a historical character in addition to its agricultural one.

From the vineyard, views stretch across the surrounding landscape, the forests of the Gerecse and towards Tata. The extent of the forest can also be quantified: Gerecse Forest covers two-thirds of Baj’s two-square-kilometre area. In Baj, winegrowing, forests and hiking offer different focuses for day trips.

Church art and architectural history

The Roman Catholic Assisi Szent Ferenc-templom is dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi. It was built between 1764 and 1795 in the German variant of French Rococo, in the Zopfstil style; Fellner Jakab and Anton Gott are named as its master builders. The dates, style and two names provide specific points of reference for the church’s architectural history.

The furnishings include four frescoes with different subjects: they depict the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ, the founding of the church and the descent of the Holy Spirit. There is also a finely painted, wood-carved Stations of the Cross in relief, made in Ortisei in South Tyrol. A municipal report published in 2021 also describes the restoration of the Angster organ as complete. It was carried out as part of a project to preserve and present natural, architectural and cultural assets.

Hiking trails with different routes

The Baj–Körtemplom circular hike starts in Baj beside the wine cellars, passes via Kálvaria to the Szent-Péter Rotunda, and returns to Baj via the Új-Hegyi lookout point. The stations of the Baji Kálvaria stretch for almost two kilometres along a scenic, untamed route.

Other trails have their own focus: You can hike from Baj into the forests of Öreg-Kovács on the S hiking trail. The Tarján–Baj–Tata route follows a narrow, scenic forest trail alongside the stations of the Baji Kálvaria in the direction of Baj. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Baj’s proximity to the Gerecse Mountains also offers opportunities for hiking and excursions.

There is another practical option for the return trip to Tata: a few hundred metres beyond the lower end of the Baji Kálvaria, you will reach a bus stop from which you can travel back to Tata. As no current timetable details are provided here, it is best to plan your return using the timetable in effect at the time.

Wine culture and events throughout the year

Borboléta Pincekert is located in the vineyard of Baj at Esterházy-nagypince út, 2836 Baj, Szőlőhegy, parcel 2418. Using fruit grown locally, Borboléta Pincekert makes special jams, candied fruit, fruit cheese and fruit-based confectionery. This is a culinary point of interest in its own right, alongside the wine presses and cellars.

The festive dates also vary: A traditional festival of the German-descended population is held in Baj on Pentecost Sunday. A traditional grape harvest procession takes place in September; the parish festival for Saint Francis’s Day is celebrated in early October. If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check the latest event dates in advance.
