Roman traces and later monuments lead through different chapters of Pilismarót’s history; a viewpoint, spring and walking routes offer another perspective on the landscape. For planning, it is useful to distinguish these highlights: would you mainly like to learn about the town’s history, or focus your time on nature and hiking?

Roman Traces and Monuments

Significant remains of a Roman fortification, or castrum, can be found on Kishegy. The municipality of Pilismarót is also home to significant archaeological remains, including Roman watchtowers, a camp, a cemetery and traces of settlements; the Roman name of the settlement was Ad Herculem. This distinguishes the specific location of the fortification on Kishegy from the other archaeological traces across the municipality.

Later periods are also represented by named buildings and monuments. Pilismarót has a late Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from around 1800. The former Heckenast manor house was built in the Romantic style around 1860 and is a protected monument. In terms of chronology, a late Baroque saint’s statue and a Romantic manor house built about six decades later stand side by side.

A different, more recent historical layer is the so-called “Golden Coast” along the Danube. It took shape in the 1930s with a popular beach; a holiday colony was built nearby. This development broadens the view from archaeological traces and historic buildings to the history of the Danube riverbank at the time.

Landscape and Walking Routes

The area’s natural features range from waterways to individual landmarks. The outflow of the Miklós-deák-völgyi Lakes runs through the outskirts of Pilismarót, in the westernmost valley of the Visegrád Mountains. In the built-up area, it flows into the Malom stream, which in turn flows into the Danube. The Hoffmann Spring is also one of Pilismarót’s significant natural features.

Another specific landmark is Hirsch-rom: the viewpoint in the Maróti Hills is 451 metres high and offers panoramic views in all directions. Together with Hoffmann Spring, these are two distinct natural features—a high point with panoramic views and a named spring.

A pleasant walk over the loess hills of Bitóc leads to the Basaharc Valley or to Vaskapu above Esztergom. From Malom-völgy, Dobogókő can be reached via Hosszú-hegy. When choosing a route, consider your destination: the walk over Bitóc has two named destination options, while the route via Hosszú-hegy leads to Dobogókő. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a specific hike.

This way, your choice of where to stay can reflect your own itinerary.
