The Roman Catholic church in Heves is the town’s oldest architectural monument: it was built in the 13th century and remodelled in the Gothic style in the 15th century. Together with the Reformed church, local collections and memorial sites, it forms a cultural focus that explores different aspects of the town’s history.

Churches from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century

Two construction phases can be distinguished at the Roman Catholic church: its construction in the 13th century was followed by its remodelling in the Gothic style in the 15th century. The Reformed church on Gyöngyösi Street was built much later, between 1926 and 1929. It is locally protected and regarded as an important building for the town’s religious and cultural life. The two churches thus represent different periods: the Catholic church dates back to the Middle Ages, while the Reformed church belongs to the first half of the 20th century.

Town History, Art and Chess

The Hevesi Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény opened in 2005 in the neoclassical former town hall at Hősök tere 1. It showcases the town’s past and present. The building also houses a permanent exhibition of works by Kő Pál in a dedicated area. This brings town history and a permanent art exhibition together at the same address.

The Sakkmúzeum in Heves offers a different focus for its collection. Its exhibits include antique chess sets, medals and portraits of chess players; famous games are also part of the exhibition. Chess enthusiasts will find a clearly defined thematic experience here, alongside the broader references to the town’s history.

The Radics-kĂşria adds an exhibition venue, a display room, a weaving workshop and a folk art gallery to this selection. Heves thus brings together a variety of cultural themes: town history, visual art, chess and folk art.

Collections and Places of Remembrance

A stone collection is located in the courtyard of the children’s library in Heves. It includes stone artefacts from former noble estates and public buildings, as well as locally protected gravestones from disused cemeteries. Their origins and protected status give the collection a distinct focus within the town’s cultural and historical heritage.

The Mártírok Csarnoka is located in the Jewish cemetery in Heves and contains furnishings from the town’s former synagogue. A memorial site honouring the town’s freedom fighters of 1848–1849 was established in 2004 in the cemetery at Pusztacsász in Heves. These places address different aspects of remembrance and can be considered separately from the collections and churches.

A Longer Tour as Another Option

A 40 km tour starts and ends in Heves. It passes through Tarnaméra, Boconád, Tarnabod, the Sóderbányák, Pintér-tanya and Erdőtelek; several stops are outside Heves. The tour therefore covers a different scale from the individual cultural sites in town. When planning your trip, you can choose between two distinct options: the churches, collections and memorial sites in Heves, or a longer route with several stops.

If you are looking for a holiday rental in Heves, you can first consider which of these options you would like to shape your trip around: architectural history, collections and remembrance, or the 40 km tour. These themes offer different starting points for a stay without needing to be combined into a fixed sightseeing itinerary.
