Mosonmagyaróvár combines architectural history and museum exhibitions with opportunities on the water and by bike. These themes offer different ways to experience the town: Óvári Castle represents a long architectural history, while the Hansági Museum features local history exhibitions and collections. The Lajta and EuroVelo 6 add a canoe route and a cycling route to these cultural perspectives. You can focus on your interests rather than treating the different themes as interchangeable.
Castle, Museum and Baroque Architecture
Óvári Castle acquired its present form and appearance in building phases separated by considerable periods of time. It was built in the mid-13th century. In the 15th century, it took on its present irregular quadrilateral shape; its current appearance dates from the first half of the 19th century. This chronology reveals several stages in its architectural history: the construction was followed by the development of its present form, and later by its current appearance. For those interested in architecture, the sequence of these changes is an aspect in its own right, in addition to the castle itself.
The Hansági Museum complements the view of the building with exhibitions and historical collections. It presents a local history exhibition as well as an exhibition on the history of the Mosoni Plain. Archaeological, ethnographic and local history objects and documents bring these themes to life. The museum is one of Hungary’s oldest continuously operating museums and opened to the public in 1887. Those interested in historical objects and documents will find a different perspective here from the architectural history of the castle.
The Szent-Gotthárd Parish Church is Mosonmagyaróvár’s finest Baroque architectural monument. Together with the castle and museum, it broadens the cultural selection with another architectural theme. The three sights represent different areas of focus: changes to a historic building, local and regional history exhibitions, and Baroque architecture.
On the Lajta and by Bike
The Lajta flows through the town center in several branches for about four kilometers before joining the Mosoni-Duna. The entire section, about seven kilometers long, is navigable by canoe. For orientation, it is useful to distinguish between the two figures: the roughly four kilometers describe the river’s course through the town center, while about seven kilometers refers to the entire navigable section.
Cyclists also have a specific route to explore: the most significant cycling route, EuroVelo 6, passes through Mosonmagyaróvár and attracts cyclists. Compared with the canoe route, this is a different way to explore the town: here the focus is on the cycling route through Mosonmagyaróvár, while the Lajta offers a navigable stretch. If you plan your trip around a particular activity, you can choose between time on the water and cycling.
The Wider Region: Győr-Moson-Sopron
The wider travel destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron includes other distinct cultural themes. The Benedictine Monastery in Pannonhalma was founded in 996. The World Heritage property of the Archabbey of Pannonhalma and its natural surroundings comprises the monastic complex, the basilica, the educational buildings, the Chapel of Our Lady, the Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. In Fertőd, Esterházy Palace is an outstanding example of Hungarian Baroque-Rococo palace architecture.
The Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape also provides a distinctive setting. It includes Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shore areas. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park; the Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj cultural landscape received UNESCO World Heritage status on December 13, 2001.
An electric boat trip on Lake Neusiedl explores the reed channels and bays on the western side. Along the way, you can observe aquatic wildlife, reed warblers, great egrets, purple herons and various ducks. As dates and booking conditions can change, check them before making plans.
