Dunasziget combines natural surroundings in Szigetköz with a seasonal beach, a hiking route and places of remembrance. This lets you choose different priorities for your stay: water and landscape, outdoor activities or cultural history.

Nature, Water and Trails

Dunasziget is one of the municipalities touched by Szigetköz. The area is designated both as a Site of Community Importance and as a Special Protection Area for Birds. This connects the area with a protected site whose designation focuses on nature and birdlife.

Water-management structures are also part of the local landscape: Dunasziget’s side-channel system includes the Denkpál branch-end closure and the Denkpál fish ladder. The branch-end closure is part of the floodwater supply system. These structures add a functional aspect of the waterscape to the nature theme.

Doborgaz’s free beach is suitable for swimming and relaxation in summer. This is a seasonal offering; check local conditions before your visit. Another way to spend time outdoors is the Dunaszigeti túra, a 9-kilometre hiking route in Dunasziget. The beach and hiking route therefore offer different activities and should not be understood as parts of a single trail.

Activities in Dunasziget and Szigetköz

Jégmadár Vízitúrák, at 24 Galambos utca in Dunasziget, offers canoeing and kayaking activities. Öko Mobil Flotta, at 41 Fő utca, is associated with bicycle rentals. For trail rides, visit Szelle Lovasudvar at 113 Sérfenyő út. The Living Country Educational and Research Center at 67 Fő utca is an experience centre with family programmes. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these activities, check in advance whether it is available on your travel dates.

In Szigetköz, MC Szigetköz Vízitúra offers private water tours and canoe tours lasting from one to seven days. These regional tours give you another option for including a longer water-based activity in your travel plans. It is advisable to check tour dates and booking conditions in advance.

Places of Remembrance

Dunasziget’s Székely Gate was erected in memory of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–49. The memorial park also has a wooden bell tower. The two sites offer different cultural points of interest: the Székely Gate commemorates a specific historical event, while the bell tower is located in the park.

Győr-Moson-Sopron as a Wider Context

The wider destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron includes landscapes and cultural sites outside Dunasziget as part of a broader thematic context. The Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape includes Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shore areas. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park; the Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj cultural landscape was granted UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001.

An electric-boat trip on Lake Neusiedl explores the reed channels and bays on the western side. Among other things, you can observe aquatic wildlife, reed warblers, great egrets, purple herons and various ducks. Check the timetable and booking conditions in advance if you are planning a tour.

Another cultural landmark in the wider destination is the Archabbey of Pannonhalma: the Benedictine monastery in Pannonhalma was founded in 996. The World Heritage property and its natural surroundings include the monastic complex, the basilica, educational buildings, the Chapel of Our Lady, the Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. Thus, alongside waterscapes and wetlands, the region also offers monastic heritage and its associated sites.
