The cycling route and distinctive local features give you several reasons to visit Gönyű. The Hungarian section of EUROVELO 6 passes through the village; Kossuth Lajos utca and the ship’s mast at Háry Dezső tér add striking points of interest to its cycling appeal. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore take both cycling connections and local highlights into account.

Cycling and getting around

The Hungarian section of EuroVelo 6 passes through Gönyű. The village is accessible from Győr via a cycle path described as safe and well developed; the connection is given as approximately 15 km. These two details answer different planning questions: EUROVELO 6 places Gönyű on a route, while the approximate distance describes the connection from Győr.

Local features and ship motifs

Kossuth Lajos utca is almost three kilometres long and is considered Hungary’s longest paved village street. Unlike the approximately 15 km connection from Győr, this figure describes a feature of the street itself; the superlative also places it in a nationwide context.

A ship’s mast was erected at Háry Dezső tér and inaugurated by the Honismereti Egylet in 2008. It is considered unique in Hungary. The bicycle service point on the same square can also charge electric bicycles. If this option is important to you, check before your trip whether it is currently available. The ship theme appears in a different form at the Duna Panoráma Tanösvény: a ship-themed playground is part of the trail experience. The motif thus appears both as a landmark on the square and as part of a visit to the trail.

In the wider Raab-Wieselburg-Ödenburg destination

The wider Raab-Wieselburg-Ödenburg destination offers additional cultural and landscape themes. The Benedictine monastery in Pannonhalma was founded in 996. The World Heritage property of the Archabbey of Pannonhalma and its natural environment includes the monastery complex, basilica, educational buildings, Chapel of Our Lady, Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. Esterházy Palace in Fertőd is an outstanding example of Hungarian Baroque-Rococo palace architecture.

The Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape encompasses Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shoreline areas. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park; the Hungarian part has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj Cultural Landscape received UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001. The years refer to different facts: 1977 to the protection status of the Hungarian part of the lake, and 2001 to the World Heritage status of Fertő-táj.

The Pannonhalmi Tájvédelmi Körzet covers 8,272 hectares and has two main areas of focus: the Pannonhalmi Hills and the calcareous sandy steppes of the Kisalföld. The hills consist of three roughly parallel ridges: Szemere, Csanak and Pannonhalma. In the wider destination, this makes it possible to distinguish between the lake and wetland landscape of the Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape and the two named focal areas of the protected area.
