A distinctive motif from Egyed’s local history appears in its coat of arms: shackles, a chain and an iron ball recall the medieval kútbörtön, a well prison.

Church Architecture and Historical Furnishings

The Szentháromság Church, a Roman Catholic church, was built in 1733 in the Baroque style as a three-aisled church with a transept. In 1933, it was remodelled in the Neo-Baroque style, with the exception of the tower and sanctuary. The high altar and pulpit are original furnishings from the 18th century. The dates refer to different events: 1733 marks the construction, while 1933 marks the remodelling; the altar and pulpit are part of the original 18th-century furnishings.

Beneath the church is a crypt containing seven coffins; it holds the remains of members of the Tolnai Festetics family. The crypt and the church interior thus offer two perspectives: the history of the building and its furnishings on the one hand, and the burial of family members on the other. The Szentháromság Column is associated with the garden of the Roman Catholic church in Egyed.

Castle History and Memorials

The former Festetics Castle in Egyed, on Árpási út, is a Category II monument with registry number 9728. A report dated 14 May 2025 records an earlier organised castle opening, at which a local history researcher gave an introduction to the castle’s history. The formal classification of the former castle and a specific historical tour are presented side by side.

The Hét vezér fái, or Trees of the Seven Chieftains, were planted in 1896 in honour of the seven chieftains and Queen Elisabeth. The name refers to the seven chieftains; the dedication also names the queen. The name and the tribute thus place emphasis on different things.

In the wider destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron

The wider destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron offers further cultural and landscape highlights. The Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma was founded in 996. The World Heritage property includes the monastic complex, the basilica, educational buildings, the Chapel of Our Lady, the Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. Another architectural highlight is Esterházy Palace in Fertőd, an outstanding example of Hungarian Baroque-Rococo palace architecture.

The Pannonhalmi Tájvédelmi Körzet Landscape Protection Area covers 8,272 hectares and has two main areas: the Pannonhalma Hills and the calcareous sandy steppes of the Kisalföld. The hills consist of three nearly parallel ridges: Szemere, Csanak and Pannonhalma. Várhely lookout offers views to the northeast of Sopron, Sopron-Bánfalva, Bécsi-domb, Lake Neusiedl and the Mosoni Plain.

The Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape includes Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shores. The lake forms the heart of Fertő-Hanság National Park. The Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977; the Fertő-táj Cultural Landscape was granted UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001. An electric boat trip on Lake Neusiedl explores reed channels and bays on the western side. Along the way, visitors can observe aquatic wildlife, reed warblers, great egrets, purple herons and various ducks. Tour schedules and booking conditions may change, so check in advance when trips are available.
