Nagymágocs is a destination for anyone interested in castle landscapes and local history. The Károlyi Castle includes a large park and a lake. The Felicián Atya Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény covers the history of the town; the Szent Alajos Church and a protected former estate manager’s house also provide further historical points of interest that contribute to the local character.

Lake, castle park and English garden

The Károlyi Castle includes both a ten-hectare lake and a well-maintained park covering 41 hectares. The park is therefore a little over four times the size of the lake. The park surrounds the castle; rare old oaks and conifers grow in its English garden. The lake, park and garden are distinct features of this landscape: the figures allow the size of the water and green spaces to be compared, while the old trees and shrubs provide a distinctive botanical accent.

If, when choosing a destination, you like to combine specific landscape features with a historic setting, Nagymágocs offers several themes rather than just a single building. The lake belongs to the castle estate, the park surrounds the castle, and the English garden is part of the castle park. This makes it possible to consider each feature in its own role without conflating their different sizes and relationships.

Local history and mineral exhibition

The Felicián Atya Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény covers the geography and history of Nagymágocs, as well as living conditions in the previous century. The collection also includes a mineral exhibition assembled from Father Felícián’s collection. Local history and minerals are presented as separate themes.

The collection opened in 2003 and was named after the Capuchin friar Felícián in 2005. He worked in Nagymágocs for several decades; naming the collection after him recognized his research. This timeline helps distinguish the collection’s opening from the later recognition of Felícián. The period from 15 March to 31 October is listed for free visits to the collection. Check the visitor information before travelling, as dates may change.

Church and other historic buildings

The Roman Catholic Szent Alajos Church stands at one corner of the castle park. Its stained-glass windows were made in the Katzmann Ede workshop. Its location at the edge of the park and the credited workshop are two separate details to consider when learning about the church.

Another historical trace is the former estate manager’s house of the Károlyi estate in Nagymágocs. It has been a protected historic monument since 2011. The Károlyi Castle itself now serves as a social care facility. If you are considering a visit to the castle, please check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors.

Csongrád as a regional setting

The wider destination of Csongrád extends beyond Nagymágocs. The landscape of Csongrád-Csanád is shaped by the Tisza and its oxbow lakes, the Maros and Körös rivers, and numerous lakes and canals. Salt lakes, sandy forests and puszta areas also define the region’s natural character. Protected areas safeguard the distinctive plant and animal species found in these habitats. Csongrád-Csanád is also rich in thermal and medicinal waters.

Regional cultural highlights include the Rotunda in the Ópusztaszer National Heritage Park, with its “Szer monostora és települése” exhibition, and the open-air ethnographic collection there, the Skanzen. A visit to the Feszty Panorama in this park requires an appointment. In Szeged, the architectural openness of a Great Plain city combines with a modern metropolitan layout and a varied theatre and music scene. More than 200 protected historic buildings are also listed in Csongrád-Csanád. These regional themes offer a broader cultural and landscape context, while the castle park, collection and church provide specific points of interest in Nagymágocs.
