The Tisza and its oxbow lakes, the Maros and Körös rivers, as well as numerous lakes and canals, shape the landscape of Csongrád-Csanád. Water is therefore a recurring theme throughout the region, alongside protected floodplains and other natural areas.

River Landscapes and Protected Habitats

The protected floodplain areas along the Tisza have remained relatively untouched and are regarded as continuous areas that can be explored safely on foot. Special plant and animal species are protected in nature reserves around salt lakes, as well as in sandy forests and Puszta areas. Thus, alongside its rivers, a variety of landscapes also shape the character of Csongrád-Csanád.

Thermal and medicinal waters are another feature of the region: Csongrád-Csanád has plenty of them. Most of the area lies within the major tourist subregions of the Tisza-Körös-Maros region. Csongrád-Csanád borders Romania and Serbia to the south, and is also located at the crossroads of transport and trade routes.

Szeged: Cityscape, Views and Exhibitions

Szeged combines the architectural spaciousness of a Great Plain city with a modern metropolitan layout. It also has a vibrant theater and music scene. Visitors interested in architectural history and city views will find several points of interest at the Visitor Center of the Szegedi Dóm.

The Visitor Center has a viewing level in the west tower, reached by climbing 302 steps, with panoramic views over Szeged. Access information may change, so check before your visit. The Visitor Center also houses permanent exhibitions on the architectural history of the Szegedi Dóm and Dóm Square, as well as the liturgical collection of the Diocese of Szeged-Csanád.

The Móra Ferenc Museum in Szeged also explores the city and its surroundings. Its ethnographic, natural history and art history exhibitions bring different themes together; the exhibition program may change. The museum is housed in the Palace of Public Culture, built in the neoclassical style in 1896. Beyond individual buildings, more than 200 listed buildings are recorded in Csongrád-Csanád. If you have a particular exhibition in mind, it is therefore worth checking the current program.

History and Culture in Different Places

In the Ópusztaszer National Historical Heritage Park, the Rotunda houses the exhibition “Szer Monostora and Settlement.” The park also includes the Open-Air Ethnographic Collection, or Skanzen. These two attractions offer different perspectives: the Rotunda presents a named exhibition, while the Skanzen is an open-air collection within the park.

Another attraction there is the Feszty Cyclorama. Visits are by appointment, so take this time restriction into account when planning. In Makó, the Hagymaház adds to the region’s cultural offerings: it is a cultural center with a theater hall.

The local regulations for the Körös-torok recreation area aim to provide residents of Csongrád and visitors with undisturbed opportunities for recreation, swimming, holidays and entertainment.
