The Ópusztaszeri Nemzeti Történeti Emlékpark brings together the history of Szer’s medieval monastery, the Árpád Monument, the Rotunda, the Feszty Panorama and the Szeri Gyógynövényház. Its themes range from historic buildings to medicinal plants and their uses. Ópusztaszer thus offers different ways to explore history and culture, which you can prioritize according to your interests.

Monastery History and the Árpád Monument

The monastery of the Bor-Kalán family in Szer was built in the 12th century. It was once the wealthiest and largest monastic institution in the Alföld. The church of the medieval monastery was excavated between 1970 and 1976 and is located next to the Árpád Monument. The Millennium Monument is the park’s main symbol.

The dates point to different historical reference points: the monastery was built in the 12th century, while the church was excavated between 1970 and 1976. The Árpád Monument has a different role: it is the park’s main symbol. This allows you to consider the monastery’s history, archaeological work and the central monument as distinct themes.

The Rotunda and the Feszty Panorama

You can walk all the way around inside the Rotunda. It therefore offers a circular route through the interior of the building. At the Feszty Panorama, meanwhile, scenes are presented with explanatory texts and a beam of light.

Visiting the Feszty Panorama requires a scheduled time. During opening hours, groups of visitors set off every 30 minutes. Plan this visit as a fixed part of your schedule and check the latest visitor information before you travel.

Herbal Knowledge at the Szeri Gyógynövényház

The Szeri Gyógynövényház was built in the park in 2017, together with a herb garden, a workroom and a processing area. The garden draws on various historical periods and is partly based on plans by the Benedictine monks of St. Gallen. Its design thus brings historical references together with the cultivation of medicinal plants.

In the workroom, participants learn about different uses of medicinal plants and how to grow them through group work and individual research. The processing and drying areas are used to interactively process and dry the plants grown in the garden. The subject therefore encompasses both knowledge of cultivation and use, and the processing of garden plants.

Visitors can take part in the herbal activities “Szeri Praktika” and “Ízek, teák, levelek.” Check before travelling whether these activities are currently available.

Highlights for Your Stay

The experiences differ in nature: the monastery and excavations offer historical points of interest, the Rotunda provides a route through the building’s interior, and the herb house combines gardening, learning and plant processing. The Feszty Panorama also requires a scheduled visit. If you’re looking for a hotel in Ópusztaszer, these different interests can be a starting point for planning: first consider which themes you want to shape your stay.
