Tokaj combines a history of winemaking with a location between a mountain and rivers. The town lies at the foot of Kopasz-tető, also known on maps as Tokaji-hegy, which stands 514 metres high. The mountain and the Tisza and Bodrog rivers frame the landscape. Two interests may tip the balance when choosing Tokaj as a place to stay: cultural and historical collections and wine traditions, or tours on the water. The specific offerings can help you decide which focus better suits your travel plans.
Wine and Collection History
The Tokaji MĂşzeum is in the historic town centre, a few steps from the main square, and presents Tokaj-Hegyalja across four exhibition levels. Its collections include historical, ethnographic and visual art objects relating to Tokaj. The ethnographic collection focuses in particular on the wine and vine culture of Tokaj-Hegyalja. It includes material objects and traditional winemaking equipment, cooperage tools, and items relating to the storage and transport of wine. The collection thus offers both a broad view of Tokaj and specific insights into winemaking and craftsmanship.
The Világörökségi Bormúzeum takes a different approach: its exhibition covers not only wine but also the process of making it, the landscape and the people. The two museums therefore differ in their themes: the Tokaji Múzeum focuses on a wide range of objects relating to Tokaj, while the Világörökségi Bormúzeum considers wine and its surroundings together.
Tasting in a Historic Cellar
The Rákóczi Cellar also brings wine and history together. Built at the beginning of the 15th century, it is located in the centre of Tokaj. Wine tastings take place in the impressive Knights’ Hall, one of the largest underground cellars in the Tokaj wine region. This offers a specific tasting experience in addition to the exhibition themes. If you are planning a tasting, check the booking conditions in advance, as they may change.
Water Tours on the Tisza, Bodrog and in the Bodrogzug
The Tokaji VĂzitĂşra Központ offers a different focus on the water. The canoe and water tour centre is located on the Bodrog near the Fesztiválkatlan and serves as a starting point for tours on the Tisza and Bodrog and in the Bodrogzug. The centre organises guided tours and round trips in the nearby waterscape, as well as along the Bodrogzug water tour routes. These named areas are distinct, so you can plan your tour around the river landscape you would like to explore.
The centre offers boats and equipment for water tours, including paddles, life jackets, required equipment and barrels. This makes exploring the water a distinct alternative to exhibitions and tastings, with the focus now on the route, boat and equipment. As equipment availability may change, it is best to contact the centre in advance about a specific boat or item of equipment.
