A trip to Bükkszentkereszt offers several ways to explore the local attractions: traditional crafts, medicinal plants and a nature trail. There is also a view of the Bika-rét Valley and a winter horse-drawn sleigh race. The village can therefore be experienced through both cultural and nature-related themes.

Crafts, Church and Medicinal Plants

The Szabadtéri Néprajzi Gyűjtemény displays former tools, household objects and products of traditional crafts from the Bükk region. Exhibition topics include logging and timber transport, as well as lime and charcoal production, glassblowing and blacksmithing. The collection thus offers insight into a range of occupations and craft techniques.

The Baroque church in Bükkszentkereszt was built in the early 19th century. It adds an architectural focal point alongside the exhibition, which is dedicated to everyday life and crafts. Another focus is Gyuri bácsi gyógynövénykertje: more than 150 medicinal plant species, represented by several thousand specimens, grow in the garden, and visitor paths lead through the grounds. The emphasis here is on the plant collection and the paths through the garden.

Circular Trail, Valley View and Winter Event

The Holdviola Nature Trail is a 3 km circular route with nine stations. It starts and ends at the local youth camp. Its length, circular route and number of stations give it a distinctive profile. It differs from the medicinal herb garden, whose paths wind through a collection of plants.

The parking area offers a view of the Bika-rét Valley and the toboggan runs. A horse-drawn sleigh race takes place at Bika-rét in winter. If you would like to include the race in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.

More places to explore in the wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén

The cave landscape is a distinct attraction in the wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén. The Baradla-Domica Cave System is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Caves of the Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek cave tour is 1 kilometer long, takes 60 minutes and is rated easy. It therefore offers a different experience from the Holdviola circular trail in Bükkszentkereszt: a cave tour with a stated duration and difficulty rating, compared with a local circular trail with nine stations.

Another example in the wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén is the Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park. Its nature trail includes a 9-meter-high observation tower and a 32-meter-long suspension bridge. These dimensions give the route there a distinctive built character.

Diósgyőr Castle in Miskolc is another historical landmark: it flourished during the reign of King Louis the Great in the 14th century. Later, it served as a residence and a wedding gift for six queens. By comparison, the Baroque church in Bükkszentkereszt dates from the early 19th century; the two places thus represent different historical periods.

The Végardó Bath in Sárospatak, with its thermal pools and sauna complex, represents another area of interest. As facilities may change, check the current offerings before your visit.
