The Szent András parish church dates from the 12th century; it was first mentioned in writing in 1283. The Szladics féle tájház takes visitors to a different period: it is housed in a building originally erected in 1918. This makes it possible to distinguish between architectural history and written records, and to connect them with the memory of a benefactor family.

Church and tájház

The Szladics féle tájház building was restored with a new roof and renovated interior and exterior plaster. The memorial room is furnished with furniture and household items belonging to the benefactor family. An older municipal description identifies the rear room as a space for temporary exhibitions and other events. Check the current programme and visitor arrangements before your visit.

Karst and caves

Rákóczi 1. sz. barlang is located in the Szalonnai Karst, on the VII. mining level of Esztramos Mountain. It is notable for the richness and variety of its stalactite and mineral formations, including various types of cave pearls and helictites. It extends about 70 metres horizontally, is 750 metres long in total and has a vertical extent of 79 metres. A lake lies at the bottom of each of the two main fissure systems.

Rákóczi-barlang was closed for renovation work on 16 February 2026 and is expected to remain inaccessible for at least two years. Check whether it has reopened before travelling.

Hiking at Esztramos

A 2024 regional active tourism guide lists the Bódvarákó–Tornaszentandrás–Esztramos-hegy–Bódvarákó circular route as moderately difficult: it is 10 kilometres long, includes 220 metres of elevation gain and has an estimated duration of 2.5 hours. The time estimate is useful for planning your day; allow extra time for personal breaks. Seven via ferrata routes have also been set up on Esztramos Mountain. Check local trail and route conditions before setting out.

Regional cave context

In the wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, the Baradla-Domica cave system is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property Caves of the Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek Cave Tour is 1 kilometre long, takes 60 minutes and is considered easy. This offers a different time and difficulty level from the moderately difficult circular route at Esztramos. The regional cave attractions offer different visiting options and should not be confused in your planning with the closed Rákóczi-barlang.

Plan your stay

When looking for a holiday rental, weigh up the focus of your stay: architectural and domestic history, a circular hike with an estimated duration, or cave attractions in the wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén. Do not plan to visit Rákóczi-barlang unless its reopening has been confirmed. Also check the tájház visitor arrangements and local trail conditions for your planned activities.
