Slovak-influenced collections, a church with clearly stated historical measurements, culinary May traditions and an outdoor swimming pool with additional wellness, fitness and sports facilities give Tótkomlós its distinctive character. When planning your stay, it helps to consider these themes separately: the cultural sites focus on Slovak everyday life and local history, while the May competitions bring together cuisine and tradition. A hiking trail and the nearby Tanyamúzeum offer other points of interest. This way, you can shape your stay around culture, culinary traditions or outdoor activities.

Slovak heritage in a church, collection and memorial house

Construction of the Evangelical Church of Tótkomlós began on 6 June 1792. Its measurements specify its length, width and interior height: it is 42 metres long and 19 metres wide, with an interior height of 22 metres. Together, these three figures give a concrete sense of the church’s dimensions. They complement the historical context with a vivid description of the building.

The János Koppány Slovak Ethnographic Collection includes objects from Slovak everyday life, folk furniture, pottery, tools and decorative items. Exhibits at the Tótkomlós Slovak Open-Air Museum include a four-poster bed, painted furniture and everyday kitchen items; there is also a memorial room in honour of Judit Tomka. The two institutions have different focuses: everyday objects and craftsmanship are featured alongside particular pieces of furniture and a memorial room.

The Tótkomlós Slovak Memorial House is a protected historic building. Its architecture and furnishings bring together features of Slovak minority culture. Another historical landmark is the statue of Saint Stephen with its ornamental fountain, created by Mihály Gábor, a Munkácsy Prize laureate, and unveiled on 18 August 2001. The church, ethnographic collection, memorial house and statue offer different ways to explore local history—from a building and everyday objects to a later public artwork.

May traditions and Slovak dishes

The Szárazkolbász Competition takes place every year in May in Tótkomlós. The Ligeti Bográcsfőző Competition has a different seasonal connection: it is part of the May Day tradition. The competition features dishes cooked outdoors in a cauldron. Both events bring together cuisine and tradition, but they are linked to the calendar in different ways: one takes place every year in May, while the other is associated with May Day. If you are travelling specifically for these traditions, check the event dates in advance.

Slovak dishes are also among the culinary discoveries in Tótkomlós. Visitors can try kvaszjenka, spricka, birka káposzta and sült kolbász.

Hiking trail and bathing facilities

The Marosháti hiking trail passes through both the built-up area and the outskirts of Tótkomlós. It therefore takes you through two distinct parts of the town and adds a hiking option to the focus on historic buildings and collections. In addition to swimming, the Rózsa Outdoor Pool offers wellness, fitness and sports facilities. This range of activities makes it another way to shape your stay. Check current opening and facility details before visiting.

The nearby Tanyamúzeum

Those interested in the landscape and traditional farming will find another point of interest at the Tanyamúzeum. It is located three kilometres from Tótkomlós, on the road to Orosháza, and preserves the memory of the local scattered settlement landscape and traditional agriculture. Its focus on rural settlement differs from that of the collections about Slovak everyday life and the historic buildings in Tótkomlós. The cultural themes of a stay therefore extend from life in town to the agricultural landscape of the surrounding area.
