Nagyszénás offers a clear reason to plan your stay around your own interests: an evening of astronomy, a look at a church built in 1926, and works by an artist at the cultural centre. When looking for a holiday rental, you can decide whether to focus on local attractions or include other destinations in the wider Békés area as well.

Observatory and local culture

The Kiss György Csillagda is a special point of interest for astronomy enthusiasts. An event description published on 24 November 2024 mentions a telescope presentation every Saturday evening in clear weather by the Mira Csillagászati Egyesület from Nagyszénás and the local MCSE group. Visiting the observatory did not require buying an admission ticket; visitors could purchase a supporter ticket for 500 or 1,000 forints on site. In cloudy weather, tours of the observatory and telescopes or discussions about astronomy were planned. For these, the organisers asked visitors to register in advance by calling +36 20 426 6221 or +36 30 559 3285. Check with them before making plans to find out whether the programme and visits are currently available.

Nagyszénási Parkfürdő includes a fitness park shaded by linden trees. If you plan to visit, check the current conditions beforehand. The Roman Catholic church offers a different perspective on the town: it was built in 1926 in a classicising Neo-Romanesque style. In an exhibition room at the cultural centre, visitors can see paintings that Fábián Rózsa gave to her hometown of Nagyszénás. The building's history and the artist's connection to her hometown thus offer two distinct local themes.

Nature destinations in the wider Békés area

The wider Békés area offers everything from walking trails to activities on the water. Körösvölgyi Animal Park lies in a 26-hectare grove. A walking trail about two kilometres long passes bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures. The Jégmadár Water Nature Trail starts at the park's jetty. It covers a one-kilometre stretch of the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás oxbow lake; eight floating buoy stations introduce visitors to the oxbow lake and its animal and plant life. The trail is accessible only by canoe or boat and is intended primarily for canoeists and rowboat users without an expert guide. These details make clear the difference between a walking trail and a water route.

The Mágor-pusztai Trail is shorter, at just over 500 metres, and introduces visitors to the natural and cultural-historical features of the protected area. At the Sterbetz István Bustard Conservation Visitor Centre, this is the only place in Hungary where visitors can see great bustards up close. Guided tours, birdwatching, nature photography, themed programmes and astronomy presentations can be requested there.

The Bihari Táj Napja also offers a seasonal point of interest for nature enthusiasts. The event takes place every year on the third weekend of May. Visitors can see wild orchids growing in the Ugrai Meadow, explore the birdlife of the Biharugra fish ponds with an expert guide, and take part in other specialist and cultural programmes.
